Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A four-board bamboo set, split across two 5.5 × 8-inch, one 8 × 10-inch and one 11 × 14-inch board, for light prep and serving rather than heavy butchery. It is hand wash only, and bamboo’s hardness can wear fine knife edges, so check your knives and your sink habits before buying.

Strengths

  • Four sizes let you keep raw-meat and produce tasks on separate boards instead of flipping one board.
  • Reversible faces and plain bamboo make the set usable for cheese, charcuterie and bread after cleaning.
  • Pfaltzgraff and Wayfair both show the set at $16.99, about $4.25 a board before shipping.
  • Bamboo absorbs less water and resists scarring better than many softwoods when washed and dried correctly.
  • Published care steps and a brand-level warranty route exist for an inexpensive set.

Weaknesses

  • Hand wash only; a dishwasher cycle can raise the grain and split a glue seam.
  • No juice groove, so runoff from roasts and melons reaches the counter.
  • No nonslip feet, so a board can slide on a hard counter during cutting.
  • Bamboo’s hardness and silica can dull polished knife edges faster than maple or walnut.
  • Laminated strips can shed fibers or crack along a seam, and deep cuts are hard to sanitize.
  • The maker’s own listing is sold out at $24.99 while retailer stock is inconsistent.

Which set this is

The product name resolves to the Farberware Reversible Bamboo Cutting and Charcuterie Board Set, 4-piece, manufacturer SKU 5297914. The four boards are two 5.5 × 8-inch, one 8 × 10-inch and one 11 × 14-inch, all plain reversible bamboo with no grooves or feet. Wayfair sells the same four-board configuration under its own merchandising code FBR10682, and one Wayfair bullet still describes a 12 × 18-inch board that contradicts the maker’s own list. Don’t confuse this pack with Farberware’s three-piece bamboo set (SKU 5070344), its grooved three-piece rubberwood set (SKU 5281896) or its flexible poly mats.

Care, washing and oil

Every board is hand wash only: warm water and mild detergent, rinse, dry at once, and never soak or put them in a dishwasher. Both faces and the edges need drying, and the boards store best upright with air around them. Food-grade mineral oil keeps the surface from drying out; avoid cooking oil, which can turn sticky or rancid. A bottle of Viva Doria food-grade mineral oil lists at $8.99 at Walmart, and one bottle spread over two years works out to about $4.50 a year. For raw meat, the USDA advises a separate board and then washing with hot soapy water, with a sanitizing step of one tablespoon of unscented bleach per gallon of water.

Knives and bamboo

The maker calls the boards gentle on knives while also claiming they are 16% harder than maple, and that combination is where the caution sits. Serious Eats asked knife specialists about bamboo surfaces and reported that its hardness and silica content can wear or chip polished, high-hardness edges more than softer woods; its recommended materials include maple, walnut and hinoki. That warning is about bamboo as a material, not a measured test of this set. If your main board has to protect an expensive Japanese knife, keep this pack for bread, fruit and serving.

Is it worth it?

At $16.99 (Pfaltzgraff, 2026; Wayfair, 2026) the four boards work out to about $4.25 each before shipping, and Pfaltzgraff’s $99 free-shipping threshold can erase that saving on a small order. At the maker’s $24.99 the value is weak, and the same listing shows the set sold out. Above $22 or so, a single nonslip washable board or a grooved hardwood set is the more practical buy, especially for wet carving. Farberware lists a nonslip plastic 11 × 14-inch board at $11.99 and a grooved three-piece rubberwood set at $19.99 (Farberware, 2026), both marked sold out. A three-year life for the $16.99 set works out to about $5.66 a year; the same horizon at $24.99 is about $8.33 a year. Treat those as bookkeeping, not a promise of durability.
