Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

The eufyCam S4 is a three-lens outdoor security camera — a fixed 4K bullet plus a motorized dual-2K pan/tilt/zoom — that runs on a removable 10,000 mAh battery, an optional 5.5 W solar panel or wired USB-C power, with no required subscription. Check the name before you buy: the listing behind this page is titled “Video Doorbell S4”, but every specification on it belongs to this camera, and eufy sells a wired doorbell under the same S4 name.

Strengths

  • Three lenses in one housing: a fixed 4K bullet plus a motorized dual-2K PTZ with 8x hybrid zoom and 360° pan.
  • The 10,000 mAh battery is user-removable and charges outside the camera; a detachable 5.5 W solar panel can keep it topped up.
  • No subscription for local storage or the core AI features; Consumer Reports’ published attributes confirm the headline specs.

Weaknesses

  • Saved clips are not 4K: a stacked 2,688 x 3,040 file means each view is effectively 2,688 x 1,520 at 15 fps, and 2,150 x 1,216 with cross-camera merging.
  • 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only, confirmed by eufy’s own spec table, Consumer Reports and the FCC agent letter.
  • 24/7 snapshots, cross-cam tracking, BionicMind face recognition and Fusion Link all require a HomeBase S380 that is not in the box.
  • The microSD card and the 5 V/2 A adapter that 24/7 recording needs are both sold separately.
  • Owners report a direct-power-mode defect: the battery drains and the camera shuts off, across a replacement unit, a new cable and 30 W, 100 W and 140 W bricks.

Two products, one name

The listing behind this page is titled “eufy Security Video Doorbell S4 (Chime Included)”, but every key spec on it — the 4K bullet plus dual 2K PTZ, the 130-degree wide-angle lens, 360-degree PTZ, 8x hybrid zoom, 32 GB built in and expandable to 256 GB, the 5.5 W solar panel, IP65 — appears in eufy’s own specification table for the eufyCam S4 camera, model T8172. No video doorbell eufy sells has PTZ, a solar panel or an on-device microSD slot. The actual Video Doorbell S4 is a different product: a wired-only 9 MP, 3072 x 3072 (3K) unit with a 180° x 180° panoramic lens, radar plus dual PIR, power from existing doorbell wiring at AC 16-24 V, and Chime 2 in the box. Third-party coverage has the doorbell at $299.99 preorder with shipment estimated at the end of October 2026; CES 2026 coverage announced $249. This review covers the camera, because that is what the listed specifications describe; confirm which hardware arrives before you buy.

Clips are not 4K

eufy advertises a 4K bullet sensor, and it can record at that resolution, but the clip you download is not 4K. Two independent testers measured saved events as one stacked file at 2,688 x 3,040, each camera occupying half the frame, so every view is effectively 2,688 x 1,520 at 15 fps, and 2,150 x 1,216 once cross-camera merging is enabled. Nothing on the spec sheet discloses this. Setting motion and privacy zones is fiddly because the fixed and motorised cameras need separate setup, and L&B found BionicMind facial recognition wrong a few times.

Battery, solar and cold weather

The 10,000 mAh pack is user-removable with its own USB-C port, so a spare can charge outside the camera; a full charge takes 6-8 hours from a 5 V/2 A charger. The detachable 5.5 W panel is the nicer path if the mount gets sun: eufy says charging begins at 2,500 lux, T3 measured 100-200 mAh drawn per day against up to 270 mAh harvested, and L&B’s sunny test camera sat near 80% after two weeks while a shaded one went from 100% to 0% in 12 days. eufy’s Best Buy listing claims the panel collects 1,000-2,500 mAh/day in optimal sunlight while the camera uses 300-550 mAh/day. Placement dominates: a north-facing or shaded install will not sustain the camera.

Is it worth it?

The solo camera lists at $349.99 on eufy’s US site (checked 2026-10-16), up from the $299 it launched at in late 2025; the 2-cam kit is $799.99 and the 4-cam kit $1,399.99. If the gated features matter, the camera-plus-HomeBase-S380 bundle at $549.98 is the realistic entry point — T3’s deal widget showed it at $479.98 against the $549.98 reference. Expert Reviews flags the price against the Tapo C460 at around £100 and the Reolink Altas at around £110, and L&B puts it at roughly double the price per camera of the Imou Cruiser Dual Aurora (2,560 x 1,440 at 20 fps) for clearly better image. If 24/7 recording is the plan, price in the 5 V/2 A adapter and a microSD card, both sold separately, and weigh the direct-power defect above. A replacement battery is a €69.99 accessory on eufy’s EU storefront. There is no required subscription; local storage and the core AI features are free, and cloud backup is optional.

Which model this is

Model T8172, retail SKU T81721W1, FCC ID 2AOKB-T8172, sold through eufy’s US and EU stores and carried at Best Buy as the eufyCam S4 Triple-Lens Camera.

Do not confuse it with the Video Doorbell S4, which is a wired doorbell with a panoramic lens.
