eufy Video Doorbell C31: problems, parts and running costs
Checked: 2026-10-21
Summary
Most owner complaints about this doorbell are about alerts and wiring rather than picture quality: on some phones only a fraction of the notifications arrive, and moving to hardwired 24/7 recording silences the old mechanical bell because the chime has to be bypassed. Running costs are small, because local recording to a microSD card needs no subscription, a hardwired unit draws about $5.26 of electricity a year at an assumed $0.20 per kWh, and charging the battery four times a year works out near $0.02. The best value is below $100, including the Best Buy kit at $99.99 with a 32GB card, while above $140 the same money buys more elsewhere.
Common problems and fixes
- Notifications that never reach the phone — a June 2025 owner saw the video in the app but only about one alert in ten arrived on the phone, and an August 2025 eufy community thread describes missing human and doorbell-press notifications that came back after restarting the device; a 2025 Samsung owner got alerts working again by enabling a second in-app switch under Settings > Notifications > Security. Update the app and firmware, check the phone’s notification permission and battery optimisation, and test alerts on your own handset in the first week, because the written warranty runs 12 months and covers defects rather than delivery to one phone. [7][13][14][15]
- The mechanical doorbell stops ringing — in wired mode the existing chime has to be bypassed at the FRONT/TRANS terminals with the supplied jumper, so the old bell either rings for half a second, as a January 2026 owner reported, or stays silent even after that owner moved to a 24V/40VA supply in April 2026. eufy’s own FAQ requires the bypass for continuous recording, so this is a wiring rule rather than a fault and a warranty claim is not the route; add a plug-in eufy chime or a smart speaker, or stay on battery and accept event-only recording. [1][16][17]
- People are missed while everything else triggers — an August 2026 owner running People-only mode reports the camera firing for passing cars, leaves and rain but ignoring a person standing at the door, day and night. Adjust the activity zones and sensitivity under different lighting and keep the firmware current; nobody has published a failure rate for this, so treat it as a known limit of the base person-and-motion detection rather than a defect. [12][3]
- Live view is slow or hangs — a June 2026 owner praises the detection but reports slow clip opening, an unreliable live stream and a summer overheating warning, and a November 2024 user saw the remote view stuck on “Establishing Secure Video Channel” with firmware 3.0.5.8. Update the firmware, keep the unit out of direct sun, and expect live view to be less dependable than the recorded clips. [19][20]
- 2.4GHz-only Wi-Fi — eufy confirmed on the Best Buy Q&A page that the C31 has no 5GHz radio, so a distant router or a crowded 2.4GHz band shows up as dropouts and pairing trouble. Move the router closer or add a mesh node on 2.4GHz and pair again; there is no Ethernet or 5GHz alternative for this model. [11][3]
- The MiniBase chime will not finish pairing — eufy community users reported the T8023 failing to complete network registration, including one who says three replacement chimes behaved the same, while a March 2026 owner got it working by adding it from Doorbell Settings > Indoor Chime > Minibase/Repeater instead of the device list. Use that route first, and expect replacements from support not to solve it every time. [18]
- Clips live in the outdoor unit — the microSD card sits in the doorbell, so anyone who takes the camera takes the footage unless you export it, and the MiniBase T8023 keeps no C31 clips of its own even with a card in it. Export important clips, add a HomeBase S380 if you want recordings kept inside, and remember that some eufy features still move data to the cloud when you switch them on, so “no subscription” does not mean offline-only. [1][3][5][9]
Parts and consumables
- Rechargeable battery pack T8743111 — 6,500mAh, USB-C rechargeable, $29.99 direct from eufy (October 2026), and it fits the C31, the C30 and the E340. Most owners buy one as a spare and swap it in seconds with the included release pin; no measured months-to-replacement figure exists. [4]
- microSD card — up to 128GB, and the card is not in the basic box; the Best Buy T8223112 kit at $99.99 (October 2026) is the listing that advertises a 32GB card in the box. The research did not find a price for a specific card, so card cost is not counted in the running total; replace a card when the app reports read errors rather than on a fixed schedule. [1][10]
- HomeBase S380 — $199.99 direct from eufy (October 2026); it adds central recording, package, pet and vehicle detection, and up to 16TB of extra storage on a hard drive you buy separately. It is a hub rather than a consumable. [6]
Yearly running cost
Local recording to a microSD card of up to 128GB needs no subscription, so the required yearly cost is nothing. Electricity depends on how the doorbell is powered, and both figures are worked out rather than measured on a unit: a hardwired setup drawing about 3W around the clock comes to 26.28kWh a year, roughly $5.26 at an assumed $0.20 per kWh, while charging the 6,500mAh pack four times a year works out near $0.02 on the same rate. Real draw depends on motion, live viewing, signal and temperature.
The money that does appear is one-time: the standard doorbell at $99.99 plus an official spare pack at $29.99 and a MiniBase chime at $39.99 comes to $169.97 before tax, and a memory card goes on top when the bundle does not include one. No owner has published an annual total, and no research supports a yearly replacement schedule for the battery or the card.
When it is a good buy
Prices at other stores in October 2026: eufy’s own store listed the standard C31 at $99.99 and the E8223111 bundle with the battery pack at $129.99, Best Buy sells the T8223112 kit at $99.99 with an advertised 32GB card, and Walmart’s listings showed $99.99 for the standard doorbell and $139.99 for a version described as doorbell plus extra battery.
- Under $80 — excellent value if stock and warranty hold. [2][10]
- $80 to $100 — a good deal for night video, a removable battery and local recording; the Best Buy $99.99 kit with the card is the cleanest example. [10][9]
- $100 to $120 — worth it only when the bundle really includes the extra battery, a chime or a card. [1][2]
- At $129.99 — you pay what the base doorbell plus a spare pack costs, and those two can be bought separately. [1][2][4]
- Above $140 — the money is better spent on the Tapo or the Reolink. [21][22][23]
Alternatives:
- TP-Link Tapo D225 — $89.99 as a limited-time price direct from TP-Link (October 2026), normally $99.99, with a 4MP sensor, 180° diagonal view, a 10,000mAh built-in battery, local cards up to 512GB, an included indoor chime and person, pet, vehicle and package detection. The better choice when broader detection classes and larger local storage matter, and when a battery you cannot swap is acceptable. [22]
- Reolink Video Doorbell (Battery), original generation — $119.99 in the Reolink US store (October 2026), though stock swings to a Notify Me listing; it adds dual-band 2.4/5GHz Wi-Fi, a 7,000mAh built-in battery and package detection. The better choice on a crowded 5GHz network, with no quick-swap battery comparable to the eufy pack. [23][24]
- eufy Video Doorbell E340 — about $149.99 direct from eufy (October 2026), with a second lens aimed at parcels. The better choice when you want an explicit package camera instead of a single-lens doorbell. [4]
