eSUN PETG 1.75mm 1kg Filament: problems, parts and running costs
Checked: 2026-10-23
Summary
Standard eSUN PETG 1.75 mm 1 kg is a heated-bed filament that needs drying at 60°C for more than 8 hours; owners report recurring stringing, blobs and occasional diameter problems, and it costs about $14.99/kg before shipping and tax. It is a good buy at $12/kg or less before tax, and worth comparing against Overture, PETG-Basic, Polymaker and PETG+HS above that.
Common problems and fixes
- Stringing and blobs that survive drying — owners report strings, “PETG boogers” and clumps in January 2025 and July 2026 posts; one transparent-PETG user still saw significant stringing after 12 h at 65°C. Drying helps but does not guarantee a fix. [7][8][9]
- Diameter outside the ±0.05 mm claim (isolated report) — on August 31, 2025 a Reddit user measured a partially used spool at 1.49 mm and reported a feed error. It is a single owner measurement, not a batch audit; check with a calibrated caliper at several points before changing extrusion multiplier. [11]
- Color-dependent adhesion and stringing — a 2020 guide found eSUN black more forgiving than gray or translucent orange, while a 2017 Prusa thread found some black spools stringier than orange. Older reports may not reflect July 2025 production. [6][12]
- Strong bed bond and removal damage — PETG can grip PEI and other surfaces firmly; follow plate-specific release guidance. [2][6]
- Weak Z-direction properties — Z Izod impact 1.78 kJ/m² versus XY 4.86 kJ/m², and Z tensile 28.65 MPa versus XY 34.77 MPa, so thin snap-fits and poor orientation can fail. [2]
- Nozzle temperature conflict between documents — the July 2025 TDS says 230–260°C while the current product page says 240–260°C; tune with a temperature tower rather than assume one ideal temperature. [1][2]
- Unverified availability — the US store showed $14.99 alongside “0 in stock” for US shipping, so verify color and delivered checkout stock before ordering. [3]
Parts and consumables
- Filament spool, eSUN PETG 1.75 mm 1 kg — $14.99 posted at the US store on October 23, 2026; consumed by mass printed per month, one new spool per 1000 g used. [3]
- Dryer, storage box and hygrometer — optional user supplies; no required branded device is published. [2][3]
- Spool reel — packaging component; exact diameter and hub fit are not reliably documented, so verify AMS or carousel clearance independently. [3]
- Nozzle and build surface — ordinary upkeep; no PETG-specific eSUN replacement nozzle, glue brand or annual maintenance part cost is published. [2][6]
Yearly running cost
At $14.99/kg, raw filament is $0.01499/g. A 250 g print uses $3.75, 3 kg/year costs $44.97 and 12 kg/year costs $179.88, all before shipping and tax. Drying electricity cannot be quantified because no dryer model, wall wattage, duty cycle or utility tariff is specified, even though drying runs more than 8 hours at 60°C. Printer electricity and wear depend on the machine, settings, print duration, failed jobs and regional rates. The filament itself is the only consumable; no mandatory refill cartridge is used. [2][3]
When it is a good buy
Good buy at $12 or less per 1 kg sealed spool before tax, including reasonable shipping on a combined order. At $12–$16, roughly the advertised $14.99 range, check delivery charge and actual stock; at $14.99 the cost is about $0.015/g of net filament before shipping. Above $16–$18, compare alternatives: Overture PETG 1.75 mm 1 kg black at $12.99 (Best Buy, SKU 6671926, vendor specs 230–260°C nozzle, 65–70°C bed, 60°C/5h drying, claimed ±0.02 mm) or the separate eSUN PETG-Basic at $12.49, which also showed 0 in stock. At about $20, Polymaker PETG new formula at $19.99 advertises a faster-print profile. Where throughput matters, eSUN PETG+HS at $16.72 is a separate high-speed formulation requiring its own profile. An eBay resale listing at $34.79 with no returns is an unusually uncompetitive asking price and should not be treated as a normal market upper bound.
Named alternatives:
- Overture PETG 1.75 mm 1 kg black — $12.99 at Best Buy (SKU 6671926). The better choice when no particular eSUN color or preset is required and a lower-cost spool with a lower bed-temperature recommendation is acceptable. [13]
- eSUN PETG-Basic 1.75 mm 1 kg — $12.49 at the eSUN US store, but the examined variant showed 0 in stock. The better choice on paper for staying with eSUN at a lower price, but not a known immediate in-stock substitute. [14]
- Polymaker PETG new formula 1.75 mm 1 kg — $19.99 at the official store. The better choice when faster production and a different profile matter more than reusing a tuned eSUN standard-PETG profile. [16]
- eSUN PETG+HS 1.75 mm 1 kg — $16.72 at the eSUN store. The better choice where standard PETG’s under-150-mm/s guidance is limiting. [17]
