Summary

A budget FDM 3D printer with Klipper firmware, 500 mm/s speed capability, and a 300 °C nozzle. Check your network setup before you buy: there is no WiFi, and Klipper’s advanced features require a wired Ethernet connection.

Strengths

  • Direct-drive dual-gear extruder handles TPU and flexible filaments.
  • Dual Z-axis with synchronizing belt reduces Z-wobble.
  • Large cooling fan array (four 4020 fans) provides fast layer cooling.
  • Easy assembly: about 30 minutes, 90% pre-assembled.

Weaknesses

  • No WiFi: Klipper features require a wired Ethernet connection.
  • Leveling is not fully automatic: manual auxiliary leveling is required before auto-leveling can run.
  • Elegoo Cura slicer is buggy: multiple reviews report under-extrusion and failed prints.
  • Cooling fans are loud: exceeding 60 dB with peaks to 70 dB during high-speed printing.
  • Leveling wheels can shake loose during speed testing; lock nuts recommended.
  • No accelerometer included: input shaping cannot be tuned without adding an external one.

Leveling and setup

The Neptune 4 requires manual “auxiliary” leveling before the 121-point auto-leveling can run, a step back from the Neptune 3’s fully automatic system. Tom’s Hardware reported adjustment wheels shaking loose during speed testing and recommends lock nuts. Owners on Reddit report inaccurate bed-level readings causing print-head jumps during printing. At least one owner on Reddit described intermittent Z-homing problems that took days of troubleshooting. Another noted one gantry wheel on each side turns easily while the other is very tight.

Slicer software

The included Elegoo Cura (a modified Cura 4.8.0) is buggy: both Tom’s Hardware and Tech Advisor report under-extrusion and failed prints. Switching to Ultimaker Cura with a Neptune 3 profile fixed the issues. The touchscreen runs a Marlin-like UI, so Klipper’s advanced features (input shaping, pressure advance) are not accessible from the screen and require Fluidd or Mainsail via Ethernet.

Noise and cooling

The motion system is claimed to run below 50 dB, but the cooling fans exceed 60 dB with peaks to 70 dB during high-speed printing. The large cooling array (four 4020 fans) provides fast layer cooling, which helps print quality at speed, but it makes the printer loud. If noise matters in your space, this is not a quiet machine.

Is it worth it?

At $219 from ELEGOO US direct, the Neptune 4 is a strong beginner value: Klipper firmware, 500 mm/s capability, 300 °C nozzle, 121-point auto leveling, and a direct-drive extruder at a budget price. The missing WiFi and buggy slicer are acceptable tradeoffs at this price. Above $260, compare against the Creality Ender 3 V3 KE and Anycubic Kobra 2, which are budget Klipper printers with similar or lower pricing. Above $300, the Neptune 4 Pro at $229 from ELEGOO direct becomes a better option.
