ELEGOO Mars 5 Ultra: problems, parts and running costs
Checked: 2026-10-16
Summary
The Mars 5 Ultra is a compact 9K resin printer with a tilting vat, automatic leveling and Wi-Fi. There is no built-in resin heater, so below 25 °C the resin thickens and adhesion failures climb, and the LCD screen carries only a 3-month warranty as a consumable. Keeping one running means resin, release film, isopropyl alcohol and eventually a replacement screen, but the sources give no owner-paid annual figure. ELEGOO’s official store lists it at $259–269 as of August 2026.
Common problems and fixes
- Auto-leveling failures — the mechanical sensor spring cable is the most common failure point, causing intermittent “Automatic leveling failed” errors, sometimes as early as the fifth print; straighten or replace the cable. [4]
- Firmware 1.3.9 soft-bricking — since December 2025 firmware V1.3.9 has soft-bricked printers at the ELEGOO logo; recovery requires flashing firmware matched to the mainboard revision, so confirm the revision before updating. [4]
- Cold-resin failures — there is no built-in heater; below 25 °C the resin thickens, adhesion fails, layers knock and prints stick to the film instead of the build plate; an external heater is a separate purchase. [4][5]
- AI camera misses failures — it is corner-mounted with no backlight, cannot see the whole plate, detects only an empty plate and warps, and time-lapse works only for models taller than 50 mm. [3][4][5]
- Build plate adhesion swings — some owners report prints sticking too well or not enough; bottom exposure calibration is critical. [4][5]
- Build plate screws bottomed out — on some units the factory drives the adjustment screws fully into the standoffs, making manual leveling ineffective without added washers. [4]
- Resin leaking into the tilt mechanism — spilled resin can enter the tilt gap and cause noise, stuttering and sensor errors; clean the tilt mechanism and optical sensor. [4]
- Z-axis stuttering or plate stuck in the vat — caused by the spring cable, a dry lead screw or loose motor screws; grease the Z lead screw and rail with white lithium grease. [4]
Parts and consumables
- Replacement LCD screen — approximately $69–85 (Printer Hub, August 2026); it is a consumable with only a 3-month warranty. [4][7]
- Release film (PFA, 0.15 mm, 206 × 146 mm) — a five-pack costs about $25; it is a no-warranty consumable and the layer counter warns at 60,000 layers. [4][6]
- Resin — standard or ABS-like, about $20 per kg. [4]
- Optional extras — resin heater, Mars Mate air purifier and Mercury Plus V3.0 wash-and-cure station. [4][6]
- Documented assemblies — ELEGOO’s wiki lists part numbers for the mainboard (A0M071), constant current board (A0M011), UV light panel (A0M041), touchscreen (A0M0B1), lead screw motor (A1M021) and cooling fan (A1M041), and sells them individually. [4][7]
Yearly running cost
Not enough data. The priced items in the sources are resin at about $20 per kg, a five-pack of release film at about $25, and a replacement LCD screen at $69–85 once the three-month warranty expires; no owner-paid annual total is reported. [4]
When it is a good buy
- ELEGOO official store, August 2026: $259–269 (Printer Hub); Maker Hacks referenced $270 and the MSRP is $349.99. [4][5][3]
- At or under $270 it offers strong value; $271–350 stays reasonable for miniatures; above $350 the value fades unless the exact combination of compact size, 9K resolution and tilt mechanism is required. [3][4]
- ELEGOO Mars 5 (non-Ultra) is the better choice when the tilt vat, AI camera and Wi-Fi do not matter, costing about $100 less. [2][5]
- Saturn 4 Ultra 16K is the better choice when larger-format printing matters. [5]
