ELEGOO Mars 5 Ultra: problems, parts and running costs

Checked: 2026-10-16

Summary

The Mars 5 Ultra’s main known issues are a leveling sensor whose coiled spring cable wears and throws intermittent “Automatic leveling failed” errors, a reported firmware 1.3.9 boot brick, first-layer adhesion that is either too weak or too strong on defaults, and no built-in resin heater for rooms below 25-30 C. Running costs are the usual resin basket — resin, IPA, gloves and replacement FEP film — with wash-and-cure stations and a cold-room heater as extras, and no yearly total quantified in the sources. At $269 or less it is a strong buy for beginners and miniature printing; near its $349.99 MSRP it weakens against larger-format machines.

Yearly running cost

Not enough data. The sources list the recurring items — resin, IPA, gloves and replacement FEP film — and note that wash-and-cure stations and a cold-room heater are separate purchases, but no yearly total or per-item price is given.

When it is a good buy

At $269.00 or less (ELEGOO US official sale, October 2026) it is a strong buy for beginners and miniature printing. Between $271 and $300 it is fair-to-good if the small 9K footprint matters; from $301 to $350 it weakens as it approaches the $349.99 MSRP, where the same money reaches larger-format machines in ELEGOO’s own Saturn family; above $350, wait for a sale. ELEGOO US also lists it certified pre-owned at $229.99, and the UK official store showed it at £289.00 reduced to £231.00, with 3DJake UK at £256.84. Choose the Saturn family instead when you want a larger build volume at a similar price; choose this small-format 9K machine when 18 um detail and near plug-and-play setup matter more than size.
