Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A dual-spool filament dryer whose spools rotate 360° while they dry, built for makers printing moisture-hungry materials like PA and PVA. Check the temperature accuracy and the 3 kg caution before you buy: one instrumented test found +7 °C overshoot at 50-55 °C setpoints, and one owner warns the rotation mechanism struggles with 3 kg spools.

Strengths

  • Three heating-power modes, 12 temperature profiles and a humidity-hold mode cover sensitive and hygroscopic filaments.
  • Eight filament outlets let filament feed straight into the printer, replacing a side-mounted spool holder.
  • The rotation motor is user-replaceable, rated 1500 h, with a spare motor, a spare roller and two spare O-rings in the box.
  • One instrumented test rated it the quietest of three dryers compared, with a quiet fan.
  • In a thread asking for general dryer opinions, a Reddit commenter singled it out for rotating filament while it dries and for fitting two spools or one large one.

Weaknesses

  • One instrumented test measured +7 °C overshoot at 50-55 °C setpoints, tightening to ±1 °C at 60-70 °C.
  • There is no rubber gasket, so the unit cannot hold dryness once powered off and the desiccant slots do nothing unpowered.
  • Heat-up is slower than other dryers and the bottom gets noticeably warm; it needs a heat-resistant surface.
  • One Reddit owner warns against 3 kg spools: the spool walks to one side despite printed fixes and the rotation meets heavy resistance.
  • It is one chamber, not two, so both filament types share one set of parameters, and the lid does not latch for carrying with spools inside.

Rotation and heating

The Polyphemus heats with a 130 W PTC element and rotates the spool platform 360° at the press of a button, in roughly 9° steps. Rotation is the point: it keeps the whole spool in the hot air instead of baking one side. EIBOS adds three heating-power modes and 12 profiles, so PLA and PP, PA and PVA each get their own temperature and time.

The only instrumented test found real quirks. 3DPrintBeginner measured +7 °C overshoot at 50-55 °C setpoints (50 °C set read 57 °C) and ±1 °C accuracy at 60-70 °C, which the tester linked to the bottom-mounted sensor. AMSTUDIO reports slower heat-up than other dryers and a noticeably warm bottom. No dB figure has been published; the same test rated the Polyphemus the quietest of three dryers, and the same owner who warns about 3 kg spools calls the noise acceptable, with fans that are not whiny.

Storage, desiccant and the 3 kg expansion

Two desiccant tanks and a humidity sensor feed a settable target mode: set the relative humidity and the dryer auto-regulates to store filament without heating full-time. EIBOS markets this as storage for expensive hygroscopic filaments. The catch is the seal: there is no rubber gasket on cover or base, so once the unit powers off, moisture returns and the desiccant slots do nothing unpowered. Treat it as a dryer that holds dryness only while it is on.

The 3 kg capability needs a separate expansion kit, and it carries the strongest owner warning in the research. One Reddit owner (Dec 2023) tells people not to buy it for 3 kg spools: the spool walks to one side despite printed fixes, and the rotation cam, a small O-ring, meets heavy resistance. The instrumented test also caught the rotation motor stalling with two 1 kg spools in some cases. Both are single-source signals, not a defect rate, but anyone printing from 3 kg spools daily should weigh them.

Assembly and upkeep

The Polyphemus ships flat-packed: about 15 minutes of assembly, 10 screws for the cover, the base pre-assembled, and it was the only unit of three in one test that needed assembly. In the box are the base, a clear-lidded cover with handle, power cord, Teflon tube, silicone stoppers, a long hex wrench and the manual. The clear lid makes spool checks easy; the height expansion frame is a separate package that adds 45 mm.

Maintenance is mostly desiccant. The two tanks take silica gel or granules, and refills are the standing running cost next to 130 W of electricity. The rotation motor is rated 1500 h and user-replaceable from the underside, and EIBOS includes a spare roller motor, a spare roller that allows single-side rotation while printing from the other side, two spare cam O-rings and sealing plugs for unused holes. Settings survive a power outage. Support runs through support@eibos3d.com, and no warranty terms are published.

Is it worth it?

EIBOS direct lists the Polyphemus at $99.99 on sale, marked down from $149.99. That undercuts the 2025 street prices that drew criticism: The Gadgeteer paid $139.99 at review in Feb 2025, AMSTUDIO recorded $143 for the base unit in April 2025, and both found it hard to justify against dual dryers in the $60-80 range. AMSTUDIO’s May 2025 review compared the Creality Space Pi at $89 and the four-spool SUNLU S4 at about $149. West3D lists the Polyphemus with 3 kg extension at $109.99 on sale, regular $159.99, and EIBOS lists the 3 kg expansion kit as a $15.00 accessory.

At that direct price the dryer lands under $110, where the feature set — rotation, three power modes, 12 profiles, eight outlets, desiccant tanks, power-loss memory — is not common. Between $111 and $130 it is fair value. The $131-150 band is where reviewers balked, and above $150 only the rotation feature or the 3 kg expansion makes sense, and the 3 kg path carries the owner warning. The deeper limit is evidence: one instrumented test, sparse owner history and no published warranty. If you print PA, PVA and other hygroscopic filaments and want them rotating while they dry, the sale price is defensible. If you just need dry PLA, a $60-80 dual box does the job.

Which model this is

This page covers the EIBOS Polyphemus, the dual-spool rotating dryer, in its base form and a 3 kg expansion version; the researched listing is ASIN B0DHY5CXPG, and whether that listing maps to the US 120 V variant is unverified. Do not merge it with the non-rotating CYCLOPES or the single-spool Series X Easdry — different products with different specs, which retailer pages and some reviews mix up.
