Summary
A budget true wireless earbud released in late 2021, with IPX7 water resistance, Qi wireless charging and call quality that rivals pricier pairs. Check the fit if you have small ears: the smooth chassis stays put for most people, but not all.
Strengths
- IPX7 water resistance and Qi wireless charging are both rare at this price.
- Call quality rivals earbuds costing $100 or more, per Wirecutter’s panel.
- Wirecutter named the Free 2S its budget pick for wireless earbuds in 2026.
- The 18-month warranty is longer than the typical one year for budget earbuds.
- One owner reported five years of daily 12–20 hour shift use before the earbuds failed.
Weaknesses
- No active noise cancellation or hear-through mode.
- Touch controls are fussier than physical buttons.
- A high-frequency spike in the sibilant and cymbal range can fatigue at loud volumes.
- The microphones are not wind-resistant; a solid gust causes buffeting.
- The smooth, low-grip chassis can be insecure for people with small ears.
- Reddit users report warranty returns directed to China and small refund offers instead of replacements.

Sound quality and calls
Wirecutter’s panel, drawing on tests of more than 600 wireless earbuds, liked the sound for the price: bass notes have pitch and defined attack and decay, with more high-frequency detail than similarly priced earbuds. The catch is a spike in the “s”/“t” sound and cymbal-crash range that can be fatiguing at loud volumes. A Japanese audio review scored the Free 2S 9.0/10, with 9.5 for the low range and communication quality, describing neutral studio tuning with tight, deep bass and somewhat docile highs; it noted low resolution and highs that turn too transparent in the presence region.
Call quality is the standout. Wirecutter reported the noise-reducing microphones rival earbuds costing $100 or more, and Reddit owners confirm good noise suppression on calls and voice notes. The weakness is wind: the microphones are not wind-resistant, and a solid gust causes buffeting sound.
Fit, controls and app
Wirecutter found the fit comfortable for most, with a small touch surface less prone to misfires than similar systems, but the smooth chassis has less grip and people with very small ears may have trouble keeping the earbuds in place. One owner noted the fit beats AirPods Pro for larger ears. Touch controls work, including volume, but Wirecutter found them fussier than physical buttons. Single-earbud use is supported, the EarFun Audio app is free for iOS and Android, and the earbuds shut off after 10 minutes if not connected.
Battery, charging and upkeep
EarFun rates the Free 2S at up to 7 hours per charge and 30 hours total with the case (40 mAh per earbud, 400 mAh case). A 10-minute charge adds 2 hours. The case charges over USB-C in 2 hours or wirelessly in 3.5 hours, and Qi wireless charging is unusual at this price. The case itself has no water resistance rating. EarFun’s FAQ recommends cleaning the charging contacts with alcohol if the earbuds fail to charge, cleaning the dust filter every 3–5 days to prevent volume imbalance, and drying the earbuds before placing them in the case to prevent short-circuit damage. There are no user-serviceable parts, and EarFun does not sell replacement ear tips or cases directly for this model.
Warranty and support
EarFun covers the Free 2S with an 18-month warranty, longer than the typical one year for budget earbuds, plus 30-day money-back returns. The catch is service: Reddit users report EarFun directing returns to China for warranty work and offering small refunds instead of replacements. No repair guides exist, and with no replacement parts sold directly, a failed case or earbud usually means replacing the whole set.
Is it worth it?
EarFun lists the Free 2S at $59.99. At that price the value is fair: the feature set — IPX7, wireless charging, aptX, 4-mic ENC calls, 18-month warranty — is unusual, but newer budget models with active noise cancellation exist, such as the EarFun Air Pro 4, and the sound has real compromises. The case for it strengthens at sale prices, which is where Wirecutter’s budget-pick designation landed in September 2026. If you want noise cancellation or a hear-through mode, look elsewhere. If you want cheap, waterproof earbuds with good calls, this is the budget pick.
