Summary
A bladeless fan, fan heater and cooler for year-round use, with a magnetic remote, a degree-set thermostat, 10 fan speeds, Jet Focus and Diffused modes, 70° oscillation and a sleep timer. Check two things before you buy: independent tests put much cheaper heaters ahead of it, and owners report an H2 heating fault after about two years.
Strengths
- Fast, measured heating: TechGearLab logged a 6.0 °F average room rise in an hour, and CNET took a 63 °F room to 70 °F in about 10 minutes.
- A true degree-set thermostat that cuts heating at the target, unlike many cheaper space heaters.
- Works year-round as a summer fan, so it does not have to be stored.
- Bladeless with no exposed element, and it shuts itself off on tip-over.
- 70° one-touch oscillation, two airflow modes and 10 fan speeds.
- Light at 5.91 lb, with a remote that stores magnetically on the machine.
Weaknesses
- Poor measured value at list price: TechGearLab ranked it 68 overall, behind the $100 Vornado AVH10 and the $115 Honeywell HCE322V.
- Owners report an H2 heating fault after roughly two years, widely attributed to dust inside the heater loop; there is no filtration.
- Almost every control needs the remote; the body has only a power button.
- Loud at maximum fan speed, which is the setting used in the fastest-heating tests.
- Direct heat is mid-pack: 10.4 °F in 5 minutes against the Honeywell’s 17.1 °F.
- Cooling mode has no thermostat and cannot be automated.

Full research notes and sources
Heating performance is real
TechGearLab’s instrumented test ran the AM09 for one hour in a 1680 cu ft room starting at 64 °F with eight sensors and measured a 6.0 °F average room rise, second in its ten-heater field behind only the Vornado AVH10’s 6.3 °F. It scored 7.0 on Room Heating and 8.0 on Consistent Warmth, and 68 overall. CNET’s climate-chamber comparison took a 63 °F room to 70 °F in about 10 minutes, and to 75 °F after 45 minutes. Consumer Reports’ lab results say it heats a standard-size room very quickly and a seated person very quickly.
What that performance costs
The two heaters that beat the AM09 in TechGearLab’s ranking, the Vornado AVH10 and the Honeywell Digital Ceramic HCE322V, list at $100 and $115. On direct heat the AM09 rose 10.4 °F in 5 minutes against the Honeywell’s 17.1 °F, and on noise it measured 43.2 dBa, mid-pack. CNET scored it 7.6 and concluded it does not outperform much cheaper competitors by enough to justify the price difference, calling the Lasko 754200 a $25 alternative. TechAdvisor, otherwise positive, called it still expensive by the standards of plug-in heaters. No current Wirecutter, RTINGS, Tom’s Guide or Better Homes & Gardens guide surfaced the AM09 as a pick, and TechGearLab awarded it none of its four slots.
The remote and the controls
The remote is effectively mandatory. The only control on the body is the power button, so losing the remote costs oscillation, the Jet Focus or Diffused switch, fan speed and the timer; a replacement remote is a separately sold $29.99 part. Cooling mode is limited too: it has fan speed only, with no temperature to switch on at, and Dyson confirms the unit does not power on when plugged in, so smart-switch automation cannot restore the feature.
Durability: the H2 fault
The recurring owner complaint is an H2 error code, described as loss of heating with the unit otherwise running, appearing after roughly two years. One r/BuyItForLife owner reports this was the second AM09 in three years, with the first stopping heating and showing H2, and says Dyson support attributed it to the machine not receiving proper voltage, an explanation the owner rejects. A second owner in the same thread calls the unit unrepairable. Other owners trace H2 to dust build-up inside the heater loop, one reporting that compressed air restored heating twice over three years and another that the unit faults at a low temperature setting but works high. Dyson’s own troubleshooting leads with unplugging, running to the highest temperature, opening the filter compartment and using compressed air on the vents, which corroborates the dust pathway. Routine vent-wiping is not enough, and there is no filtration on the appliance. This is a recurring signal, not a measured failure rate.
Safety and warranty
TechGearLab’s overheat test shut the AM09 down in about 10 seconds at 150 °F, far below the 245-260 °F readings that melted grilles on two competing heaters, and it has immediate tip-over protection. Consumer Reports found the exhaust outlet cool to the touch but still safe around combustible fabrics. The earlier AM04 and AM05 models were recalled for fire risk in units made before April 2014, but no AM09 recall was found. Dyson caps the heating element at 200 °C to stay below the dust-burning point. New fans and heaters carry a 2-year warranty, with the caveats that repair labour and parts carry 12 months and Dyson Renewed machines get shorter cover.
Price and value
Dyson listed the AM09 at $499.99 new in October 2026, and the refurbished Dyson Renewed White/Silver at $249.99 in its outlet, while the official Dyson eBay store has listed certified refurbished units around $169.99-$214.99. TechGearLab listed it at $500, Consumer Reports showed $450.00 and CNET recorded a $450 US launch. One Best Buy colourway, Iron/blue, sat at $659.99, well above the black/nickel model and not a normal price anchor. The bands are clear: around $250, where the refurbished model and one owner’s threshold sit, the recurring objection about cost drops away; around $300 it stays reasonable for someone who specifically wants a bladeless, year-round appliance; at the $450-500 list it is weak on measured value, because a $100 Vornado AVH10 and a $115 Honeywell HCE322V both outscored it; and above $500 no evidence supports it. Dyson’s newer Hot+Cool HF1 Rapid React costs the same $499.99 new and adds connected control and child lock, so at list price it is the stronger Dyson buy. Running cost is electricity only, with no filters to buy: at TechGearLab’s measured 1326 W high draw, four active heating hours a day for a year is about 1,936 kWh, or roughly $290-$678 at $0.15-$0.35/kWh, before thermostat cycling. The realistic extras are a $29.99 replacement remote, a $14.99 replacement base and $3.99 non-slip pads.
Which model this is
This page covers the AM09 only. Do not merge it with the purifier-equipped or connected Dyson Pure Hot+Cool models (HP09, HP07, HP01), the cooling-only Cool Tower Fan AM07, or the recalled pre-April-2014 AM04/AM05 generation. The ASIN seen for it on a non-Amazon page is ASIN B01N3A9N2H, so verify the listing before publishing.
