Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

An enclosed single-extruder 3D printer for classrooms and small shops, with a heated bed, a 280 C hot end and network features. Check the filament policy before you buy: the warranty excludes damage from non-Dremel filament.

Strengths

  • Very good print quality across about ten test objects with no misprints (PCMag, 2018).
  • Easy setup and use with user-friendly slicing software.
  • Multiple connection options: USB, Wi-Fi and Ethernet.
  • Fully enclosed housing with particulate and carbon filters.
  • Component-level replacement parts are sold by 3PI.
  • All3DP selected it for classroom use in Spring 2020.

Weaknesses

  • PCMag found the touch screen not particularly responsive.
  • Limited filament color range compared with competitors (PCMag, 2018).
  • Warranty excludes damage from non-Dremel filament.
  • Commercial use gets only 60 days of warranty.
  • Third-party spools may not fit the built-in chamber and need an improvised external holder.
  • Support-documented issues include bed adhesion problems, extruder clogs and grinding sounds during homing.

Materials and filament

PLA, PETG, ECO-ABS, Nylon and TPU are supported, with a heated bed to 100 C and a 280 C all-metal hot end. Third-party 1.75 mm filament can be used, but RFID auto-detection and remaining-filament tracking stop working, so temperatures and speeds must be entered manually. Spools that do not fit the built-in chamber must be fed externally with an improvised spool holder. At the time of the PCMag review, PLA was $29.95 per 0.5 kg spool in 11 colors and Eco-ABS and nylon were $34.95 per 0.5 kg spool (PCMag, 2018).

Repairs, parts and running costs

Routine care means unclogging the extruder with the supplied tool, rinsing the glass platform under warm water to dissolve glue, and wiping the exterior with a lint-free cloth. 3PI sells replacement parts, including a nozzle assembly for $74.99, a leveling sensor for $38.99, a stepping motor for $69.99, a carbon air filter for $14.99 and a main board for $399.00 (3PI). Third-party filament is allowed but voids warranty coverage for related damage.

Warranty and support

The warranty runs one year for non-commercial and educational use and 60 days for commercial use, and it applies only to the original registered purchaser. It excludes tampering, accident, abuse, unauthorized repairs, unapproved attachments and damage from non-Dremel filament. Support is provided from Racine, Wisconsin, with phone numbers 1-800-437-3635 and 1-844-437-6533 listed. 3PI provides mechanical replacement guides for the leveling arm, camera and build platform clips.

Is it worth it?

3PI lists the 3D45-01 at $1,999.00 (3PI, 2026), positioning it for education and professional use; its value rests on the enclosed housing, heated bed, multi-material support, network and cloud features, camera and component-level parts availability. PCMag considered it worth Editors’ Choice at a $1,799.00 MSRP in 2018 for engineers, product designers and educators. Buyers needing only basic PLA printing may not need the heated bed and multi-material capability.
