Summary

A 6-inch double-sided diamond bench stone with extra-fine 1200-mesh and fine 600-mesh surfaces, made for knives, blades and small tools. It stays flat and needs no soaking, but the 6-inch length is short for long blades and the fine side will not leave a mirror finish.

Strengths

  • Cuts faster than conventional stones and stays flat without ever needing lapping.
  • No soaking required: use it dry or with water.
  • The diamond surface showed no wear or delamination after months of regular use.
  • Cleaning takes only soap and water.
  • Compact and portable.
  • Two grits on one stone cover refining and honing.

Weaknesses

  • The 6-inch length is short for large kitchen knives and long blades.
  • The extra-fine 1200-mesh side does not leave a true mirror finish.
  • Metal sludge clogs the surface and needs scouring powder to clear.
  • DMT sells its stones separately by grit, which confuses first-time buyers.
  • DMT publishes no manufacturer warranty for this model; only the retailer advertises support.

Sharpening and finish

Both sides are continuous diamond, with no gaps to catch a point, which is why the stone cuts quickly and resists dishing. The steel plate is ground flat and DMT guarantees it stays that way, so there is no flattening routine as there is with waterstones. The catch is the finish: the extra-fine 1200-mesh side refines an edge but does not produce the mirror polish a waterstone gives, and specialist testers say you need an 8000-grit waterstone or a leather strop to go further. Home cooks and most knife owners will not notice the difference.

Cleaning and upkeep

Diamond stones load up with metal sludge, and this one is no exception. Rinse it with soap and water after use, and reach for scouring powder when the surface clogs. A tester who used it on pocketknives, hunting knives and a fillet knife for months found the surface held up with no visible wear or delamination. It can be used wet or dry, though water or honing oil helps clear the swarf and stops it clogging.

Is it worth it?

DMT lists the D6EF at $75.99 direct (DMT, 2026). Sharpening Supplies shows its 6-inch Dia-Sharp grit variants at $34.99 to $43.99, though the exact D6EF variant is not broken out there, and Knives and Tools in the UK lists it at £66.99 (Knives and Tools, UK). At the direct price you are paying a premium for the continuous diamond surface, the dual grits and US manufacturing. Below that, the same stone is better value, but check the grit combination before you buy, because variants share similar names.

Which model this is

The US listing for the exact model is ASIN B000GD3V3E. Buyers searching the Dia-Sharp line will run into single-sided variants such as the D6EE, D6C and D6E; the D6EF is specifically the double-sided extra-fine and fine version. DMT’s Dia-Sharp line spans several sizes from 4 inches up to 12 inches, so confirm the size and grits as well as the model number.
