Summary

A corded 3-amp 5-inch random-orbit sander locked at a fixed 12,000 OPM, sold as a kit with a dust bag and a soft carrying bag. Check the package before buying: the plain DWE6421 drops the carrying bag, and the variable-speed DWE6423 trades fixed speed for a dial.

Strengths

  • In Reviewed’s eight-sander comparison it removed paint fastest, about three minutes on a painted pine board.
  • The same test praised comfortable gripping and good dust removal with a shop vacuum.
  • The short palm housing and counterweight help with close work.
  • Common eight-hole discs keep abrasives cheap and easy to find.
  • The soft carrying bag is included, unlike the plain DWE6421.
  • Pads and the belt are replaceable, so a healthy motor can be kept running.

Weaknesses

  • Fixed 12,000 OPM gives no gentle-speed option for veneer or finish work.
  • Reviewed found the fast-cutting tool jumped and pulled, needing steering near edges.
  • The small cloth dust bag needs frequent emptying and is not HEPA-rated.
  • The 6-ft cord is permanently attached.
  • The circular pad cannot finish sharp internal corners.
  • The manual forbids drywall and warns against sanding suspected lead paint.

Which model this is

This page covers the DWE6421K, the single-speed 5-inch random-orbit sander sold with a dust bag and a soft carrying bag. The bagless DWE6421 is the same sander without the bag. The DWE6423 and DWE6423K add variable speed, and the DWE6420 uses pressure-sensitive adhesive discs instead of hook-and-loop. The shared manual is labelled Type 2 while PartSelect’s exact parts list is for Type 1, so check the nameplate before ordering internal components.

Sanding performance and control

Speed is fixed at 12,000 OPM with no dial, so there is no gentler setting for veneer or between-coat work. Reviewed tested eight corded orbital sanders on a painted 12-by-8-inch pine board with 80-grit, then 120-grit to finish: the DWE6421K removed paint in about three minutes against roughly five for several rivals, but the reviewer also found it jumped and pulled and needed steering near edges. Pro Tool Reviews corroborates the specs but published no separate instrumented long-term test. The manual says to use long, light sweeping passes without pressing hard; pressing reduces finish quality and can overheat the tool.

Dust collection and pads

Out of the box the sander uses a locking cloth dust bag on its AirLock port; it is small, is not documented as HEPA-rated, and needs frequent emptying, and resin-laden dust can self-heat and ignite. A DEWALT DWV010 or DWV012 extractor fits directly, and a DWV9000 connector is sold separately for a third-party 1-1/4-inch hose. The genuine DWE64233 pad fits the DWE6421 and DWE6423 and lists at $20.97 at Home Depot, with a 90-day pad warranty; it is held on by four screws you remove after unplugging. Abrasives are cheap: a 50-pack of DIABLO 120-grit discs is $22.97 at Home Depot, about $0.46 per disc, and a POWERTEC 50-pack is $16.90, about $0.34 per disc.

Parts, repairs and running costs

Parts are documented for the DWE6421K Type 1 at PartSelect: the pad-control belt N430442 at $7.73, the base-plate assembly N329079 at $44.63, the dust bag N273733 at $11.94, the brush-box N292059 and switch 656494-00 at $6.40 each, the cord N389354 at $19.14, the strain-relief 330005-01 at $10.56 and the dust skirt N371139 at $6.40. Replace the belt when it stretches or causes abnormal pad rotation, not on a schedule, and verify the Type number first. The recurring cost is paper: at $22.97 per 50 DIABLO discs, 25 discs a year is about $11.49 and 100 discs about $45.94, while the POWERTEC pack works out to $8.45 for 25 and $33.80 for 100. An OEM pad every two years amortizes to about $10.49 a year. Electricity is minor: 250 W for 40 hours a year is 10 kWh, about $2.50 at an assumed 25 cents/kWh, a scenario rather than a measured draw that also excludes any vacuum.

Is it worth it?

October 2026 US listings put the DWE6421K at $64.89 at Home Depot in one recent view and $79.99 in others, $79.90 at Tool Nut but backordered, and $94 at Ace Hardware and MaxTool; a Walmart snapshot showed $73.99 but was about five months old. Under $70 new and authorized is excellent, $70–80 is good, and $81–94 is fair only if the kit and pickup matter. At $95 or more, compare the variable-speed DWE6423 at $99 or the Bosch ROS20VSC at $105. If you sand one-off jobs, the cheaper SKIL SR211601 is $39.98 at Lowe’s.
