Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A cordless brushless 20V MAX XR 4-1/2-inch angle grinder with a sliding lock-on switch, Kickback Brake, E-CLUTCH overload protection, and Power Loss Reset. It suits owners already on DEWALT 20V batteries for intermittent cutting and grinding; the supplied Type 27 guard is not the closed guard required for many cutting wheels.

Strengths

  • Three electronic protections: rapid brake, anti-kickback intervention, and power-loss restart prevention.
  • Fixed 9,000 RPM and 850 MWO target solid material removal with flap discs and short cuts.
  • DEWALT 20V MAX battery owners can reuse packs already on hand.
  • Brushless motor removes routine carbon-brush maintenance.
  • Standard US 5/8-11 spindle accepts specified threaded wheels and attachments.
  • DEWALT provides type-number diagrams and a parts catalog for service.

Weaknesses

  • Runtime is short: about 10–15 minutes of active grinding on a 5Ah pack and about 10 minutes on a 4Ah pack in owner reports.
  • The slide lock-on switch is awkward for some users; there is no paddle dead-man trigger.
  • Speed is fixed at 9,000 RPM with no variable-speed dial.
  • The included Type 27 guard is not sufficient for many cutting wheels.
  • Bare tool only: battery, charger, discs, cutting guard, and case cost extra.
  • Weight and balance change noticeably with larger battery packs.

Which model this is

This page covers the North American DCG405B bare tool, UPC 885911677202. Do not confuse it with European/other-market DCG405N/P2, the paddle-switch DCG413B, the later DCG407B slide-switch model, or higher-power DCG410 models. The official US/Canada manual calls the family DCG405. The “B” identifies the bare tool, not a battery pack.

Runtime and battery

Owner reports put active grinding at roughly 10–15 minutes per 5Ah pack and roughly 10 minutes per 4Ah pack, but these are different workloads and anecdotal measurements, not a standardized runtime guarantee. A 5Ah pack on a 4Ah job may last longer; sustained loading also warms the tool. New owners should budget for batteries and a charger: one example is $169.27 for the bare grinder plus $119.00 for a DCB205 5Ah battery, or $288.27 before charger, discs, guard, and tax.

Guards and cutting

The kit’s Type 27 guard covers approved grinding setups. For abrasive and diamond cutting wheels, the manual requires a closed two-sided Type 1/41 guard, which is not in the box and must be bought separately.

October 2026 asking prices observed: Home Depot category crawl at $169.27 versus $209.92 on an individual model page; Toolup at $219 but unavailable; Crown Tools at $149.99 but sold out; Grainger at $313.37; Lowe’s requires location for price. DCG413B appeared at $87.15 promotional against $227.99 comparison, and DCG407B at $179.00. At or below $150 for a genuine in-stock DCG405B from an authorized seller is attractive for buyers who already own chargers and packs. Above $210 bare tool is weak value unless procurement support matters.

Parts, consumables and running costs

No subscription, software account, brushes, or compulsory annual plan. Costs are abrasives, charging electricity, occasional battery replacement, PPE, and failure-based service. Ten cutoff wheels per year using two five-packs of DW8062B5 at $5.97 each is $11.94; 25 wheels is $29.85. A 5Ah pack stores about 90 Wh at 18 V nominal; 100 full equivalent charges is about 9 kWh, or about $1.80 at an illustrative $0.20/kWh before charger and cell losses.

Service parts for Type 1 include: Type 27 guard OEM #N501322 at $14.42 (RepairToolParts) or $20.68 (PartSelect); side handle #N401305 at $6.40; clamp washer #N115381 at $6.40; flanged hex nut #N484249 at $22.67; gearcase #N522578 at $40.44; motor and switch assembly #N509544 at $91.62; rotor #N537673 at $39.45; baffle #N478435 and spring #N105579 at $2.52 each. A DCB205 5Ah battery is $119.00 promotional or $169.00 list. The closed Type 1/41 cutting guard price and stock were not independently verified. A motor or switch repair can approach the cost of a new tool.

Support and warranty

DEWALT’s US package includes a three-year limited warranty against defects, one year of free service for normal wear, and a 90-day money-back guarantee for the original buyer from an authorized seller. Misuse, unauthorized modification, and accident damage are excluded. Service uses ToolServiceNet with the DCG405B model and stamped type number. One verified buyer reported the grinder stopped working and received a support ticket; another reported a missing component. No representative claim approval rate or median turnaround was found.
