DEWALT DCF923B ATOMIC 20V MAX 3/8-Inch Impact Wrench: problems, parts and running costs

Checked: 2026-10-17

Summary

The DCF923B is a compact bare-tool 3/8-inch impact wrench, so the usual complaints are about the missing battery and sockets, hog-ring socket fit, and treating Precision Wrench as if it set final torque. There is no scheduled consumable: apart from an occasional battery, running cost is a few dollars of electricity a year. It is a good buy at $140–$180 for someone already on the 20V MAX platform, and poor value above $220.

Common problems and fixes

Parts and consumables

Yearly running cost

No scheduled consumables: the manual asks for weekly vent cleaning with clean dry air, not a part replacement. Electricity is the only routine cost — a 5Ah pack stores about 90 Wh, and one full recharge a week at an assumed 85% round-trip efficiency works out to about 5.51 kWh a year, roughly $1.10 at an assumed $0.20/kWh. Everything else is one-time or condition-based. [2]

When it is a good buy

The Power Tool Store listed the bare tool at $179 in October 2026, marked down from $239, and Home Depot listed it at $239. $140 or less is excellent, $140–$180 is good, $180–$220 is fair, and above $220 the same compact design with a 1/2-inch anvil — the DCF921B, also $239 at Home Depot — or the bulkier DCF891B at a $199 Home Depot promotion (600 ft-lb fastening, 800 ft-lb breakaway) deserve a look.
