Summary
A bare-tool 1/4-in impact driver for people who already own DEWALT 20V MAX batteries, built around its 5.1-in length and 1,700 in-lbs of rated torque. Check your battery drawer before you buy: no pack or charger is included, and the small packs DEWALT ships with the kits are the most repeated owner complaint.
Strengths
- Pro Tool Reviews measured 3,000 in-lbs of breakaway, matching DEWALT’s premium DCF887 on the same rig.
- The 5.1-in body reaches under sinks and between studs where bigger drivers cannot.
- The three-LED ring lights the fastener better than most drivers owners have used.
- The variable trigger gives fine speed control on small screws once you learn it.
- Ships with a belt clip and carries a 3-year limited warranty.
- Runs on the large existing 20V MAX battery pool.
Weaknesses
- No battery or charger in the box, so platform newcomers pay for the whole system.
- The 1.3–1.5 Ah kit packs are the most repeated complaint, and they have no fuel gauge.
- TechGearLab’s battery-cycle test was the tool’s worst result: 2.5 drive cycles against 5 or more for the leaders.
- Single speed only, with no clutch or torque presets.
- Runs hot and sounds loud during extended use.
- No on-board bit holder.

Size, speed and measured torque
Pro Tool Reviews measured 2,206 in-lbs of fastening torque and 3,000 in-lbs of breakaway, essentially the premium DCF887’s breakaway figure, and timed it at 464 rpm in the ledger-screw test. Its score was 79.3 overall, with size (94) and value (97) its strongest marks. TechGearLab measured 215 ft-lb of fastening torque, loosened a 300 ft-lb nut in 4 seconds, and got a 130-mm length and 92 dBA at the user, but scored the tool 66 because of its battery result and missing features.
Battery life and runtime
The most repeated criticism is runtime, and it is really a battery criticism. TechGearLab’s cycle test returned 2.5 drive cycles against 5 or more for the leading tools, and Bob Vila measured about 40 minutes from the kit’s 1.5 Ah pack. Owners in the ToolGuyd thread were blunt about the 1.3 Ah kit packs: one called them the reason he would not try the tool, another noted the packs have no fuel gauge. The counter-argument in the same thread is that a 1.3 Ah 18 V pack stores roughly what a 2.0 Ah 12 V pack does, and that brushless tools are not power hungry, so one shared 20 V charging system can be enough.
Heat, noise and controls
Bob Vila noted the tool can get hot during extended use and that the motor is on the noisy side; TechGearLab measured 92 dBA at the user. The DCF809B is single speed, with a variable trigger and no clutch or torque presets, which suits the size class but leaves out features that rival compacts carry. Some launch-thread commenters also preferred DEWALT’s older DCF887.
Repairs, maintenance and warranty
The manual calls for little more than keeping the tool clean and out of liquid; the charger and battery pack are not user-serviceable. DEWALT backs the tool with a 3-year limited warranty, 1-year free service and a 90-day satisfaction guarantee, and no recall or service bulletin appeared in the sources. No owner failure cluster specific to the DCF809 — chuck, gearbox, motor or electronics — could be verified, and no multi-year ownership reports exist in the material, so treat long-term durability as unproven rather than known.
Is it worth it?
Under $90, the bare tool is strong value for someone who already owns 20V MAX packs and needs tight-access driving; $91–130 is fair and worth waiting for a promotion, and above about $130 it is weak as a bare tool with 3-speed alternatives nearby. Launch pricing was $119 for the bare tool and $149 for the one-battery kit in March 2019, the list sat near $120 through 2022, and a two-tool drill-and-impact kit with 2 Ah batteries ran at $169 in May 2025 (Slickdeals). If you are new to the platform, budget for a larger pack than the 1.3–1.5 Ah kits include.
Which model this is
This page covers the DCF809B, a bare tool in DEWALT’s ATOMIC Compact Series launched in March 2019; battery and charger are sold separately. The same mechanical tool is sold outside the US in kits under the DCF809 name with 18V XR labeling, and US kit variants carry the C1 and C2 suffixes. Do not confuse it with the three-speed DCF850, the XR DCF845B or DCF860B, or the older DCF885 and DCF887. Some third-party listicles wrongly call it a three-speed tool; DEWALT’s documentation and both instrumented tests confirm single speed with a variable trigger. The Amazon listing for the tool-only SKU is ASIN B07QJ96V1S.
