Summary
A compact 20V MAX brushless hammer drill sold as a bare tool, so you need a battery and charger already. Check that before buying: the bare tool ships with neither, and the headline power figure changes with the battery you fit.
Strengths
- The 6.93 in head and 2.49 lb body reach spots bigger hammer drills cannot.
- A brushless motor, 15 clutch settings and two speeds cover drilling and driving.
- The metal ratcheting 1/2 in chuck holds bits well.
- It runs on the 20V MAX system, where one set of batteries covers 300+ tools.
- DEWALT backs it with a 3-year warranty and a year of free service.
- Value is strong when a kit is discounted.
Weaknesses
- The bare tool includes no battery or charger, yet listing photos show a battery anyway.
- The 543 UWO figure needs the 5.0 Ah pack; on the compact 2.0 Ah battery it is 404 UWO.
- No independent instrumented test measures its torque, drilling speed or runtime.
- UWO is DEWALT’s own metric and does not translate directly to torque.
- It overlaps heavily with the near-identical Atomic DCD799 sold at other stores.
- The manual warns the clutch does not slip in drill or hammer mode, so the tool can twist if it stalls.

What it is and who it is for
This is the Lowe’s-channel compact brushless hammer drill in DEWALT’s 20V MAX line, launched in early 2023 as the value-tier replacement for the DCD778. It is over an inch shorter than the model it replaces and rates 404 UWO with a compact battery against the DCD778’s 340 UWO. The near-identical Atomic DCD799, sold at Home Depot and independent dealers, is shorter still at 6.49 in and rates 552 UWO; DEWALT support has called it the upgrade of the DCD798.
Kit versions and batteries
The bare tool box holds only the drill and a belt hook. If you are starting from nothing, the DCD798D1 kit adds a 2.0 Ah DCB203 battery, a DCB107 charger, a belt hook and a bag, and the DCD798P1 kit swaps in a 5.0 Ah DCB205 battery and a charger. The 543 UWO headline applies only to the 5.0 Ah pack.
What owners paid
Prices seen in October 2026 put the bare tool around $169 at Acme Tools and Burns Tools, with a $199 list at a Fastenal reseller catalog. The DCD798D1 kit was $179 at Lowe’s per September 2025 deal coverage and $189 at an independent reseller. The DCD798P1 kit ran $199 at Lowe’s and $160.74 at Acme Tools, with a $179 sale against a $219 reference in September 2025. A Reddit deal post flagged a $99.99 Lowe’s listing that a commenter said included battery, charger and bag, and an owner reported paying $169 for the drill with a 5.0 Ah battery and charger at Lowe’s.
Is it worth it
The case for the DCD798B is compactness, price inside the 20V MAX system and DEWALT’s service network, not measured performance, which nobody has independently established. Near $169 or less it is reasonable if you already own 20V MAX batteries and want occasional masonry work; the reviewer who tested it was skeptical the hammer function would earn its keep for light DIY. Above $199 for the bare tool it is weak, since discounted kits have sold for less.
Which model this is
This page covers the DCD798B, the bare-tool DCD798. The listing ASIN is B0BY19V6S3. Kits using the same drill are the DCD798D1 and DCD798P1. Do not confuse it with the Atomic DCD799, the DCD793 or DCD794 drill/drivers, or the larger XR hammer drills such as the DCD805 and DCD1007.
