DEWALT DCD771C2: problems, parts and running costs
Checked: 2026-10-17
Summary
The DCD771C2 is DEWALT’s 20V MAX compact drill/driver kit with two 1.3Ah batteries, a charger and a bag. It is a brushed-motor drill for wood screws, furniture assembly and routine holes in wood, sheet metal and drywall. The recurring issues are a keyless chuck that wears and slips and small packs that run out of charge quickly. Ongoing cost is near zero at about $0.62 a year for charging, but parts are condition-based, so it is a good buy at $89 or less with the full kit, acceptable to about $110, and poor value at $119-$130.
Common problems and fixes
- Brushed-motor sparking and noise — a January 2025 owner saw a white flash through the rear vents on trigger release, and a June 2024 owner reported sparks with a FlexVolt pack; the manual warns power tools can generate sparks. Small commutator sparks do not prove failure, but smoke, a burning smell or unexpected loss of power means stop and get service. [8][11][2]
- Overheating and smoke on oversized bits — a CDW customer reported smoke after boring several large holes in plastic with a 1-3/4-inch spade bit; avoid stalling the drill on heavy loads. [12]
- Short runtime from the compact batteries — independent testing finished four complete task cycles and stopped during the fifth on a compact pack, where competitors with larger packs passed ten; the second included battery partly covers a working session. [3]
- Knock or click in high gear — April 2026 Reddit owners disagreed on whether the sound is normal; one said the brake “clack” on abrupt trigger release is expected, another said comparable units do not knock. Mechanical grinding or a gearbox that refuses to engage is a service trigger. [10]
Parts and consumables
- Battery pack — the Type-1 diagram lists DCB201 1.5Ah at $66.14 at Home Depot; current kits advertise 1.3Ah packs commonly identified as DCB207, for which no stocked single-pack price was found. Replaced on capacity failure, not annually. [5][14][16]
- Higher-capacity batteries — DCB203-2, two 20V MAX 2.0Ah packs, $99 at Home Depot in one observed promotion. Replace only as aging requires. [15]
- Charger assembly — N264209, $34.43 at RepairToolParts; no scheduled replacement interval. [16]
- Chuck — N230360, marked unavailable by RepairToolParts and eReplacementParts. [16][17]
- Chuck retaining screw — N092854, $2.52 at RepairToolParts; left-hand thread, so removal is clockwise. [16][18]
- Motor-and-mount assembly — N279939, $41.40 at RepairToolParts or about $50.55 at Fix.com. [16][24]
- Transmission assembly — N279940, $41.78 at RepairToolParts. [16]
- Trigger/electronic control — N279942 Type-1 listed out of stock; an OEM-labeled N279942/N868629 switch for $38.75 on eBay. [16][25]
- Optional belt hook — N268241, $3.67 at RepairToolParts. [16]
- Bag — N294699, $14.49 at RepairToolParts. [16]
- Drill and driver bits — not included with the kit; no fixed replacement interval. [1][5]
Yearly running cost
No subscription, app or scheduled replacement, so ongoing cost is $0 a year before electricity. Charging is the only routine cost: an illustrative 100 full-equivalent recharges a year at 75% efficiency and $0.20/kWh comes to about $0.62 a year, an assumption rather than a measured figure. Batteries, chuck, motor and switches are condition-based. [1][2][16]
When it is a good buy
At $89 or less with both batteries, charger and bag, this is a strong buy; at $90-$110 it is acceptable if you already use DEWALT 20V MAX batteries or want two small packs; at $119-$130 it is poor value unless same-day pickup or an existing battery platform tips the balance. These are editorial thresholds, not observed offers. [3][5][6]
Named alternatives, October 2026 Home Depot listings: the brushless RYOBI ONE+ HP PSBDD02K at $99 with one 2.0Ah battery; the same retailer’s PSBDD02K2 at $139 with two compact batteries; the larger PBLDD02K1 with a 4Ah pack at $149; and DEWALT’s more compact brushless ATOMIC DCD794D1 with one 2.0Ah battery at $179. RYOBI batteries do not fit DEWALT tools. The DCD771C2 listed at $119 at Home Depot, $129 at Lowe’s and $160.52 at one Walmart marketplace seller in October 2026. [19][20][21][22][5][6][23]
