Summary
DEWALT’s 20V MAX XR 1/2-in mid-range impact wrench (DCF891/DCF892) rates 600 ft-lbs of fastening torque and 800 ft-lbs of breakaway torque in a sub-4 lb bare tool, aimed at pipe flanges, grooved couplings, tilt-wall braces, wheel lugs and concrete anchor setting. Check the box before you buy: bare-tool SKUs include only the wrench and a belt clip, with batteries and charger sold separately.
Strengths
- 600 ft-lbs fastening and 800 ft-lbs breakaway torque in a 3.7–3.83 lb bare body.
- Precision Wrench control pauses before impacting in forward and stops impacting once the fastener breaks free in reverse, limiting run-off.
- Runs on every DEWALT 20V battery, so existing 20V owners can buy the bare tool without a platform re-buy.
- Owners in r/Tools and r/Dewalt speak warmly of it, several picking it over the newer DCF900 and DCF921.
- 3-year limited warranty with a 1-year free service contract and a 90-day money-back guarantee.
Weaknesses
- Bare-tool SKUs ship with the wrench and belt clip only — battery, charger, sockets and case are separate purchases.
- The hog ring fits tight on some sockets, the one drawback PTR listed in its 2025 ten-tool comparison.
- A r/Dewalt thread reports a DCF891 that “started to make grinding noises this morning”; the URL was never retrieved, so there is no follow-up.
- Nobody has published a failure rate or instrumented runtime; durability evidence is anecdotal in both directions.
- An impact wrench is not a torque wrench — final torque needs a torque wrench, and low battery voltage reduces fastening torque.

Rated torque vs measured torque
DEWALT rates this wrench at 600 ft-lbs max fastening and 800 ft-lbs max breakaway. PTR says the gap is methodology, not a defect: impact rate versus static torque.
The real-world tests went the DEWALT’s way. Against the Milwaukee 2962, PTR timed the bolt break at 23.77 s versus 26.09 s and ran the lag bolt flush in 27.71 s with the Milwaukee leaving 0.56 in; against the Makita GWT07, 23.77 s versus 32.62 s and 2.0 in left on the lag bolt. In both tests the DEWALT posted the lower inertia torque (329.6 ft-lbs against 412.8 and 502.3), and PTR credits the 3250 IPM impact rate for the wins. In its 2025 comparison of ten cordless impact wrenches, PTR scored the DCF891 at 95 points with no significant drawbacks beyond the tight hog ring.
Modes and Precision Wrench control
Four modes: Low, Medium, High and Precision Wrench. Per the manual, Low runs 0–600 RPM forward and 0–2000 in reverse, Medium 0–1200 forward and 0–2000 in reverse, and High 0–2000 in both directions. Tightening torque by mode is 100 ft-lbs in Low, 300 in Medium and 600 in High and Precision Wrench.
Precision Wrench is a fastening aid, not a fourth power level. In forward, the tool runs at up to 2000 RPM until the fastener meets resistance, pauses for roughly half a second, then switches to impacting. In reverse, it stops impacting once the fastener breaks free, which limits run-off. The manual also warns that an impact wrench is not a torque wrench — verify final torque with a torque wrench — and that low battery voltage reduces fastening torque.
Batteries, kits and what’s in the box
The bare tool ships with the wrench and a belt clip only. Battery, charger, sockets and case are not in the box. If you already own DEWALT 20V packs, every one of them works — the manual specifies 18 VDC nominal, 20 V max — so existing owners avoid a platform re-buy.
Kits add batteries and a charger: the DCF891P2 has two DCB205 5Ah packs, the DCF891Q1 one DCB240 4Ah pack, and the DCF891GP2 two oil-resistant DCB205G 5Ah packs, each with a charger and bag.
Recurring costs come down to DEWALT 20V batteries and a charger (not included bare), impact sockets, and a torque wrench for final torque checks.
Owners and reliability
Owner sentiment on Reddit is strongly positive for automotive and shop use. as powerful as a high torque but much lighter and more compact". In a 2026 r/Dewalt thread against the newer DCF921, the verdict was “DCF 891 all day every day”; a 2023 thread against the DCF900 reached the same conclusion, and a Garage Journal owner picked it over the older DCF894.
The caution signals are thin but real. One r/Dewalt thread titled “Dewalt impact DCF891 started to make grinding noises this morning. What to do?” was captured in search results; the exact URL was not retrieved, so there is no resolution or follow-up. Hog-ring socket fit comes up as a usability theme — the hog ring trades socket retention against ease of swap — not a defect. Nobody has published a failure rate for the noise symptom or anything else, so treat it as an isolated report rather than a known fault.
Warranty coverage is 3 years limited, with 1 year of free service and a 90-day money-back guarantee. The manual directs service to authorized DEWALT service centers using identical replacement parts; repairability beyond that network and parts catalog was not assessed in the sources read.
Is it worth it?
Pro Tool Reviews recorded the bare tool at $279, a kit with one 4.0Ah battery at $329, two 5.0Ah packs at $469 and two oil-resistant 5.0Ah packs at $529 in its July–August 2025 tests. A 2026 r/Dewalt report describes a Home Depot buy-one-get-one deal at about $125 per tool with a free PowerStack battery and charger, with the standalone tool moving to $199 during checkout.
At or under $200 bare it is strong value for anyone already in the DEWALT 20V ecosystem. Between $200 and $250 the value is fair, and PTR suggests weighing the Milwaukee 2962 — a more compact head with a 5-year warranty — before paying up. The $329 kit is a reasonable entry if you need batteries; the $469 and $529 multi-battery kits are harder to justify unless oil-resistant or high-capacity packs are what you need. Above $300 bare, the DCF900 high-torque class or competitor flagships become the relevant comparison for heavy daily use.
Which model this is
This page covers the DEWALT DCF891 (hog ring anvil) and DCF892 (detent pin anvil) 20V MAX XR 1/2-in mid-range impact wrenches, announced in February 2022; the tracked listing is ASIN B09YSW2KXL. The two models differ only in anvil. Do not confuse them with the older DCF894 (330/600 ft-lbs), the DCF900 high-torque wrench (1030/1400 ft-lbs) or the DCF923 ATOMIC 3/8-in (300/450 ft-lbs), which sometimes appears in search results for this listing. The ASIN could not be matched to a specific model number, anvil type or kit configuration, so check those before ordering.
