Dell XPS 13 (2026): problems, parts and running costs
Checked: 2026-10-17
Summary
The base 8 GB is soldered and not upgradeable, so the main problem is running out of memory on Windows 11: benchmarks that need more than 8 GB fail to complete on that configuration. There is no required annual subscription, and the recurring extras are a USB-C dongle or hub for wired audio and extra ports. Around $700 to $800 it is strong value for a Windows ultraportable; above $1,000 the Core 5 320 builds look weak next to more upgradeable machines.
Common problems and fixes
- 8 GB soldered RAM runs out — CNET measured 60% memory use at idle and 97-98% with two dozen Chrome tabs plus photo editing, and the 8 GB unit could not complete Cinebench 2024, 3DMark Steel Nomad, Solar Bay or PugetBench for Creators; the memory is not user-upgradeable, so buy the 16 GB configuration if you keep the laptop more than a year or two. [2][4]
- No headphone jack and only two USB-C ports — there is no headphone jack and no card reader, so wired audio and legacy devices need a USB-C dongle or hub; Thunderbolt 4 comes only on the Core Ultra configurations, not the Core 5 320. [2][4]
- BIOS and early-failure reports — Dell’s own product page summary lists BIOS updates bricking units, short battery endurance and unsatisfactory support on early failures; there is no independent failure rate, so treat this as a signal and keep BIOS and drivers current. [1]
- Battery life below the claim — Dell claims up to 17 hours, but CNET measured about 13.5 hours on both the 8 GB and 16 GB units and PCMag measured 21:51 in a 720p local-video loop; the gap is test methodology, not a defect. [1][2][4]
- Dim matte display — PCMag found the matte finish fairly dim at 50% brightness. [4]
- Two nearly identical colors — Sky and Storm are both silvery blues that CNET describes as hard to tell apart. [2]
Parts and consumables
- USB-C dongle or hub (none shipped) — needed for wired audio and extra ports, and the recurring extra to budget for. [2][4]
Yearly running cost
There is no required annual subscription; Microsoft 365 is a 30-day trial and McAfee+ Premium is included non-auto-renew. The only recurring extras are a USB-C dongle or hub for wired audio and extra ports. The sources give no measured electricity cost or battery-replacement cost, so the annual power figure is not enough data. [1][2][4]
When it is a good buy
Dell lists the 8 GB / 512 GB Core 5 320 at $799.99 and the 16 GB at $999.99, with student pricing at $699.99 through Nov. 2, 2026; Best Buy lists both configurations at $899.99. The research calls about $700 to $800 strong value, $801 to $900 good on sale, $901 to $1,100 fair, and above $1,100 weak for the Core 5 320 builds. [1][2][4]
- Dell XPS 13 Core Ultra 7 355 — $1,499.99 for 16 GB / 512 GB and $2,100 for 32 GB / 1 TB; the better choice when you need the extra memory, storage or Thunderbolt 4 that the Core 5 320 lacks. [1][2]
- HP OmniBook 5 14 — PCMag lists it at $899.99, the same price as the XPS 16 GB model; the better value if you need more ports or upgradeability. [4]
- Apple MacBook Neo — the machine the XPS 13 (2026) is built to rival; the better choice only if macOS is acceptable. [2][4]
