Dell UltraSharp HDR 4K Webcam: problems, parts and running costs
Checked: 2026-10-29
Summary
Owners report intermittent camera-in-use lockouts, app-specific choppy video and auto-framing glitches, plus the camera has no microphone. There are no replaceable parts or consumables, so running cost is about $0 per year apart from any separate microphone or lighting. It is a strong buy only at $125 or less new with full kit and a credible seller; at about $170 or higher, compare the Logitech MX Brio.
Common problems and fixes
- Camera becomes unavailable after first use — two owners (October 2025 and February 2026) report the webcam works once, then shows an in-use error; reconnecting USB or restarting the PC temporarily fixes it, and changing ports or reinstalling the utility did not help. Warranty coverage is not established from these reports. [16]
- Auto-framing stopped after a firmware update — one January 2022 owner reports tracking stopped after moving from firmware 0.0.7.1 to 0.0.7.5, and a replacement unit showed the same behavior after updating; three units total were involved and Dell support was described as helpful. No evidence establishes that this affects current firmware. [15]
- Choppy video only in one app — a January 2025 owner on a 2023 MacBook Pro with macOS 15.2 reports blurry or choppy footage only in Zoom, briefly corrected by launching Dell software, with an observed 640 by 360 feed; the root cause was not established. [17]
- Auto-framing jumps or zooms unexpectedly — Dell acknowledges this with virtual backgrounds, poor light, downward-facing eyes or distances beyond about 2 m; sit within about 2 m, face the camera and improve lighting, or disable tracking. Tracking is also unavailable at 60 fps. [9][14]
- Indoor light flicker — Dell documents flicker under fluorescent or LED lighting; enable Anti-Flicker, try 50 or 60 Hz in Dell software, and disable HDR if flicker persists. [2][10]
- Missing 4K over USB 2.0 or weak power — connected over USB 2.0, 4K, HDR, Windows Hello and tracking disappear; some docks and hubs may provide inadequate power. Use the supplied USB 3.0 cable connected directly, fully seat the camera-end plug and update host or dock firmware. [2][4][14]
- RF interference with nearby dongles — Dell confirms some 2.4 GHz or Bluetooth dongle keyboards and mice can lag when plugged into a neighboring port or hub; separate the dongle and webcam USB connections. [11]
Parts and consumables
- Internal sensor and lens — no scheduled user-replaceable consumables are listed and the sensor and lens are not owner-serviceable. [2]
Yearly running cost
About $0 per year. The camera is USB powered and Dell describes no paid subscription or recurring parts for ordinary operation, so there are no documented annual consumables. This excludes any separate headset or microphone, room lighting, accidental loss of the cable or cap, and host power. No independently verified watt draw or usage profile was found, so a dollar-per-year electricity estimate cannot be made from the checked material. No supported typical annual repair or replacement cost was found either; the included three-year limited hardware warranty addresses eligible defects rather than setting a predictable running cost. [1][2][18]
When it is a good buy
Verified US store offers on October 29, 2026: Dell US listed $169.99 and showed temporarily out of stock when opened; B&H Photo listed $149.99 in stock as an authorized dealer with manufacturer model WB7022-DDAO; Newegg marketplace listed $129.99 sold and shipped by third-party PlugnParts, with warranty details through the seller. [1][18][19]
- $125 or less new with full kit and a credible seller and warranty is a strong buy for someone who wants Windows Hello and owns a microphone. [18][19]
- $126 to $155 is acceptable if the 4K sensor, Windows Hello and tracking genuinely matter. [18][19]
- At about $170 or higher, compare the Logitech MX Brio, shown by Logitech at $169.99 for the Pale Gray variant and $199.99 for Graphite, which adds a microphone and newer imaging features. [21]
- For creators prioritizing 4K at 60 fps, the Elgato Facecam 4K at $199.99 MSRP offers 4K at 60 fps with a Sony STARVIS 2 sensor and fixed focus, rather than Windows sign-in convenience. [22]
