Dell OptiPlex 7070 SFF (Core i7-9700): problems, parts and running costs

Checked: 2026-10-17

Summary

The OptiPlex 7070 SFF is a used-market 2019-generation eight-core business desktop whose reported faults are fan noise under load and sometimes at shutdown, plus rare self-diagnosed PSU and motherboard failures with no established failure rate. [10][11][12][13] There is no compulsory subscription; modelled electricity cost is about $14.56 a year for an 8-hour office day and about $35.04 for an always-on light server at $0.20/kWh. [3] Under $200 is a strong price for a project machine, $276–$350 is reasonable for a tested 32GB/1TB Windows 11 Pro unit, and above $425 is weak for this generation. [15]

Common problems and fixes

Parts and consumables

No proprietary consumables or scheduled service subscriptions exist. [2]

Yearly running cost

No compulsory subscription is associated with the PC itself. The 200W PSU rating is a maximum, not a usage figure. Modelled scenarios, not wattmeter measurements: an office scenario of 35W average at the wall for 8 hours a day across 260 days gives 72.8 kWh per year, about $14.56 at $0.20 per kWh, excluding monitors, routers, printers and sleep draw; an always-on light-server scenario of 20W every hour all year gives 175.2 kWh, about $35.04 at $0.20 per kWh or $52.56 at $0.30, and the numbers double if the unit averages 40W; a high-load example of 100W for 2 hours a day over 250 days gives 50 kWh, about $10 at $0.20 per kWh for those loaded hours only. [3] No representative failure statistics were found, so a yearly repair dollar figure cannot be stated. [2]

When it is a good buy

Observed US offers on October 15, 2026: $419.00 eBay Refurbished computersuperuser (i7-9700, 32GB, 1TB, Windows 11 Pro, Very Good, free standard shipping, 30-day seller-paid returns, one-year Allstate coverage); $635.25 Newegg Marketplace CNB Computers with similar specifications; $445.99 PC Liquidations Grade A (8GB/256GB, 30-day returns, one-year retailer warranty); $382.98 Grade B with the same base configuration; $299.99 Sunnking 32GB/1TB Windows 11 Home, out of stock when checked; $655.99 Swing Computers Certified Refurbished 32GB/1TB Windows 11 Pro with a two-year Allstate warranty. [15][16][17][18][19][20] Working thresholds: under $200 is strong for a project or secondary machine; $200–$275 is solid with 16GB and an SSD; $276–$350 is reasonable for 32GB, 1TB and activated Windows 11 Pro tested; $351–$425 is conditional, since a 7080 may be better; above $425 is generally weak for this generation; above $600, skip. [15][21]

Named alternatives: the OptiPlex 7080 SFF (i7-10700, 16GB, 512GB, Windows 11 Pro) at $399.99, or $339.99 with the displayed coupon, from Wisetek on eBay Refurbished, is the better choice when a newer platform and stronger multithreading matter more than 32GB/1TB out of the box. [21] The OptiPlex 7070 Micro (i7-9700, from $367.98 with 8GB/256GB at PC Liquidations) is the better choice only when the smallest footprint outweighs standard SFF expansion and power supply. [22] A base 8GB/256GB 7070 SFF (Grade B, $382.98) is not automatically a bargain against the $419 32GB/1TB unit, because memory and storage upgrades add cost and risk. [18][15]
