Summary
A no-power calcium-chloride desiccant bag for closets, laundry rooms and other small enclosed spaces, with a hook to hang it and a clear chamber for the brine it collects. Check before buying: it is disposable rather than refillable, and the listing can point at a different-size bag than the one you expect.
Strengths
- Runs without electricity or batteries, so it works in closets, boats and RVs where a dehumidifier cannot go.
- Removes real moisture: in CHOICE’s sealed test it cut humidity to 43% within three days.
- A hook and a clear brine chamber make it easy to hang and check.
- Grocery pricing of about $4–$5 a bag makes it a cheap way to test a damp spot.
- Owners in boats, RVs and basements report it handles small moisture problems.
- No maintenance beyond watching the crystals dissolve.
Weaknesses
- It is slow: CHOICE measured about 2 ml of water per hour against 113–388 ml/hour for electric dehumidifiers.
- It is disposable and cannot be refilled.
- Effectiveness drops in well-ventilated rooms.
- The collected brine can damage leather and metal.
- One owner in humid Florida reported mold growing on the crystals with no water collected.
- Listing sizes are muddled: the ASIN can point at 16 oz bags while the product is 15.4 oz.

Full research notes and sources
What it can and cannot do
CHOICE’s 2025 test put a container in a sealed closet-size chamber at 80% relative humidity with a fan. Within three days it pulled humidity down to 43% and collected almost half a cup of water. At 65% humidity it removed about 2 ml of water per hour on average, against 113 ml/hour for the worst electric dehumidifier in the same test and 388 ml/hour for the best. That is the honest picture: it works on low-level damp in a closed space, and it is nowhere near an electric dehumidifier for anything bigger.
Running costs and where to put it
Kroger lists the 15.4 oz bag at about $4.89, and Lowe’s lists a 46.2-oz three-pack at $12.48, roughly $4.16 a bag. There is no power draw and no refill; when the crystals are gone the bag goes in the trash. A label caution worth repeating: it works in closed areas and its effectiveness is compromised in well-ventilated spaces, so it is wrong for an open room. Do not use it in a moving vehicle, do not hang it near leather, and keep the brine away from leather and metal.
