Summary
A 12-cup programmable drip brewer that delivers coffee into an insulated stainless carafe instead of a glass jug on a hotplate, with 24-hour timed brew and a reusable gold-tone filter. Check the carafe before you buy: the insulated pitcher pours awkwardly for many owners, and coffee cools passively once brewed.
Strengths
- Consumer Reports’ lab test of the DCC-3400 found brewed water held at least 195°F for five to six minutes.
- 24-hour scheduling, Regular/Bold and 1–4 cup modes suit irregular schedules.
- Passive thermal holding avoids cooking already-made coffee on a hotplate; prewarming the carafe helps.
- The gold-tone cone removes the need for paper filters; #4 paper cones are an inexpensive alternative.
- Cuisinart lists genuine spares with prices: carafe $47.95, lid $8.95, cone $13.95, filter holder $8.95, basket holder $14.95.
- A 3-year warranty and a parts catalog beat no-name thermal brewers where one damaged carafe scraps the machine.
Weaknesses
- Dribbling, splashy pouring and a difficult last cup recur across independent tests and owner reports.
- The narrow carafe mouth is hard to reach for hand cleaning; coffee oils can build up.
- Some owners report coffee cooling within 30 minutes; others praise all-morning heat, so retention varies.
- Filling the top reservoir from a heavy carafe is awkward and can spill; steam can wet cabinets above.
- The basket can overflow if grounds are too fine, two filters are stacked, or the carafe is out more than 20 seconds.
Verified specifications
| Model | Cuisinart PerfecTemp DCC-3400NAS; the factory handbook covers the DCC-3400 series. The base DCC-3400 is discontinued; DCC-3400NAS is the active variant. |
|---|---|
| Capacity | 12 five-fl-oz coffee-maker cups, 60 US fl oz total. “12 cups” is not twelve 8-fl-oz measuring cups. |
| Carafe | double-wall insulated stainless steel with a locking flow-control lid; no active reheating plate, and Cuisinart suggests preheating with hot water. |
| Size | 9 × 7.75 × 14.25 in. The listed height is the closed appliance; allow extra overhead for the top lid and steam. |
| Controls | backlit clock, 24-hour Auto On, Regular/Bold, 1–4 cup, optional finished-brew beep with five tones, CLEAN light, 60-second memory on brief outages. |
| Brewing | top-fill reservoir with side water window, showerhead, #4 cone basket, reusable gold-tone mesh cone, replaceable charcoal reservoir filter, included scoop. Wetted components are labeled BPA-free by the maker. |
| Brew Pause | removing the carafe pauses flow; replace within 20 seconds or the basket can overflow. |
| Water filter | charcoal cartridge; soak a replacement 15 minutes, flush the holder about 10 seconds, replace every 60 days or 60 uses, more often with hard water. Remove it before descaling. |
| Descaling | when the CLEAN light shows, remove the charcoal cartridge, fill one-third white vinegar and two-thirds water, run the Clean cycle, repeat if the light stays on, then run a fresh cold-water rinse brew. |
| Cleaning | carafe, lid and basket on the upper dishwasher rack are allowed; do not immerse the electrical base or use abrasives. |
| Warranty | 3-year limited for normal US household use by an original consumer purchaser from Cuisinart or an authorized reseller; direct store advertises 30-day returns. |

Pouring and carafe handling
Consumer Reports judged the DCC-3400 carafe handling somewhat cumbersome, including balance and emptying, and a July 2020 hands-on demonstration shows the narrow spout and flow geometry. Owners on Reddit in November 2024 and Cuisinart-syndicated retailer reviews in August and September 2026 repeat the same complaints: coffee running down the outside of the jug, steep tipping to reach the last ounces, and dribbling even with a clean, seated lid. This is best treated as a design risk rather than a manufacturing defect. A slow, low pour over the sink may reduce spills, but some owners still dislike it. Replacing the lid at $8.95 cannot be guaranteed to fix a design complaint.
Heating, cleaning and upkeep
The machine brews into a passive thermal carafe, so coffee cools on its own; smaller batches and cold rooms cool faster. Cuisinart’s manual recommends preheating the carafe with hot water, which is cheap and effective. The carafe and lid are allowed on the upper dishwasher rack, though hand washing with a long bottle brush reaches the narrow mouth better. The separate charcoal water filter needs replacing every 60 days or 60 uses, which is easy to confuse with the permanent coffee filter. Descaling uses one-third white vinegar when the CLEAN light shows; if the light returns immediately, repeat the cycle and follow with a fresh-water rinse. Do not dismantle the heater for a recurring clean light; document water hardness and contact support.
Running costs
No subscription is required. The gold-tone cone costs nothing to run unless it tears, in which case a replacement GTF is $13.95. The charcoal water filter is the real consumable: about six cartridges a year at one brew a day, three DCC-RWF-1 two-packs at $8.50 each, or $25.50 a year. At three pots a day the 60-use rule triggers sooner, about 18 cartridges or nine two-packs at $76.50. Paper #4 cones are an alternative: a 100-count Melitta box is $4.93, so one filter a day is about $19.72 a year for four boxes. Charcoal plus paper together is about $45.22 a year. Descaling uses grocery-store white vinegar with no fixed annual bottle count. Electricity is hypothetical only: if a brewer averaged 900W for 12 minutes per full pot, that is 0.18 kWh per brew, 65.7 kWh a year, or $13.14 at an assumed $0.20 per kWh. Measure your own draw. At $149.95 over a hypothetical five years, acquisition is $29.99 a year, plus $25.50 charcoal and $19.72 paper, or about $75.21 a year before coffee, water, electricity, cleaning and repair. A replacement carafe at $47.95 is an episodic expense, not a yearly fee.
Is it worth it?
Cuisinart, Abt, Macy’s and a Target marketplace listing all showed $149.95 on October 16, 2026, with varying stock, seller and return terms; Macy’s carried promotional messaging whose checkout value was not verified. At that price the BLACK+DECKER CM2046S 12-cup thermal brewer at $57.99 to $62.99 is a meaningful budget alternative, and the Cuisinart DCC-3200NAS 14-cup glass-carafe model was $119.95 at Best Buy. The OXO Brew 9-Cup at $249.99 is a smaller, differently priced specialist. The Cuisinart’s strengths are brewing temperature, 24-hour programming, a 3-year warranty and a real parts catalog; its weakness is the carafe.
Which model this is
This page covers the Cuisinart PerfecTemp DCC-3400NAS, a 12-cup thermal-carafe programmable brewer. Do not confuse it with the DCC-3200NAS 14-cup glass-carafe model, other Cuisinart thermal brewers, or single-serve pod machines. The thermal carafe and lid are OEM parts DCC-3400CRF at $47.95 and DCC-3400CL at $8.95, both listed low stock and compatible with DCC-3400NAS.
