Creality CR-Silk Small Pack: problems, parts and running costs
Checked: 2026-10-17
Summary
This is Creality’s glossy silk PLA sold as a sample pack: eight 250 g spools, 2 kg in total, for trying many colours without committing to full spools. The recurring trouble is that silk PLA is brittle, settings-sensitive and moisture-hungry, so thin parts snap and prints can shed pieces or under-extrude at settings that work on standard PLA. The pack is not a bulk discount — it works out to about $19.50 per kg, essentially the same as Creality’s own 1 kg spool.
Common problems and fixes
- Brittle prints and parts snapping — silk PLA is described as far more brittle than standard PLA, and thin pieces break easily; one owner reported pieces breaking off all over a figure print while Hyper PLA printed fine. Treat prints as display pieces and avoid thin, functional parts. [12][13]
- Inconsistent shine and under-extrusion — owners report uneven shine, slight under-extrusion in some layers and a rougher texture with silk and chameleon filaments versus normal PLA at the same settings. Run temperature and flow tuning before a real print. [14]
- Stringing with default profiles — a user printing Creality gold silk on an X1C hit stringing and bumps on the outer wall with the default profile. Lower the print speed and check retraction. [15]
- Moisture absorption and hot-end clogging — silk PLA absorbs moisture faster than standard PLA and can slowly clog the hot end; Creality’s wiki lists CR-Silk as a material to dry before use and keep dry while printing. Dry the spools and store them sealed with desiccant. [7][18]
- Settings that worked on PLA no longer work — owners commonly run slower, 60 mm/s or below, and hotter beds, up to 60 °C, than the 50 °C recommendation, so budget tuning time. [5][12]
Parts and consumables
No replaceable parts or consumables reported. The pack is itself the consumable; drying and storage supplies such as desiccant are the only optional running item.
Yearly running cost
The cost is the filament itself: about $19.50 per kg, or $38.99 for the 2 kg pack (US Creality Store, October 2026). Creality’s own 1 kg CR-Silk spool is $19.99 (US Creality Store, October 2026). Drying and storage supplies (desiccant) are optional and there is no proprietary consumable lock-in. Not enough data to compute a yearly figure.
When it is a good buy
At about $39 for 2 kg the pack is fair if you want many colours in low-commitment 250 g spools (US Creality Store, October 2026). From $40 to $50 it is weak unless the live-exclusive channel is the only way to get the colour set. Above $50 the regular 1 kg spool at $19.99 undercuts it on price, so buy standard PLA for utility prints instead. A third-party Newegg listing had Creality Silk PLA 1 kg at $24.99 (Newegg, October 2026). [1][3][8]
