Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A large-format FDM printer with a 350 × 350 × 400 mm build volume and a rigid cube frame, sold as a kit. Check whether the machine you are buying is actually new or used, and budget for a silent board and firmware work if noise or modern features matter.

Strengths

  • Rigid cube frame with dual Z and dual Y drives gives stable tall prints.
  • BLTouch auto leveling, filament runout detection and print resume are valued conveniences.
  • Tempered glass bed gives smooth bottom surfaces and easy part removal.
  • Strong community support and documented upgrade paths.

Weaknesses

  • Stock noise of 60-65 dB from non-silent stepper drivers rules out bedrooms and shared spaces.
  • Manual bed leveling is tedious on the 350 × 350 mm surface and stock springs are weak.
  • Stock plastic extruder and PTFE-lined hotend limit temperature and durability.
  • Usable bed area may be smaller than the advertised 350 × 350 mm.

Noise and electronics

The stock 8-bit board uses non-silent stepper drivers, and sources cite 60-65 dB during printing, which is unacceptable for occupied rooms until a silent mainboard is installed, bringing noise down to roughly 40-45 dB. The original mainboard is part 4002010009 and the silent upgrade is part 4002020010, but firmware and connectors are hardware-version sensitive, so the actual board label must be checked before flashing. The stock hotend is PTFE-lined and limits nozzle temperature to about 240°C unless upgraded to all-metal. A silent board reduces stepper noise but not all fan or structural noise.

Bed leveling and print quality

The BLTouch is pre-installed but does not physically turn the manual tramming screws, and one independent hands-on test found a probe sampling blind spot near the outer portion of the bed. Owners report nozzle-bed contact, failed first layers and repeated leveling on stock and customized machines. Bed flatness varies unit to unit and stock yellow bed springs are weak and drift. Realistic quality printing sits around 50-60 mm/s despite the 60-180 mm/s spec. In an October 2019 hands-on test, a calibrated machine scored 27 of 30 on an Autodesk/Kickstarter dimensional test, with visible layer irregularities.

Repairs and upkeep

Maintenance includes keeping the bed leveled and the nozzle and bed clean, maintaining the Bowden tube and POM wheels, and replacing wear items such as bed springs and POM wheels, with POM wheels expected to need replacement within about a year of heavy use. Thermal runaway protection is present in firmware. Repairability is moderate: the frame is sturdy and wear items are standard and replaceable, while all-metal hotend and direct-drive conversions are well documented. Replacement parts include a complete hotend assembly at about $24.99 from a US parts seller, a nozzle thermistor at $3.29, a 377 × 370 × 4 mm glass bed listed at €54.99 in one locale, a silent mainboard at $79.99 and an original mainboard at $105.88, though many are sold out. Creality’s US after-sales policy states a 12-month standard machine warranty and 3 months for many wear parts, but no warranty duration was located in the fetched sources for this model, so second-hand or older machines should not be assumed covered.

Creality’s US store displayed $399.00 sale against $579.00 compare-at with Sold Out status, while a 2026 review site estimates typical price at $450-650 with sale prices around $400-450 during major sales. Used-market discussion in September 2026 included owners saying they bought machines for about $150 and saw $200-300 asking prices, but these are unaudited anecdotes, not verified transactions. Value thresholds: about $400-450 on sale is strong value for buyers who need large-format printing and accept an upgrade and tuning workflow; $450-579 typical or manufacturer-direct is fair-to-good for tinkerers needing 350 × 350 × 400 mm volume if $100-300 more is budgeted for upgrades; above roughly $600 value weakens and newer large-format or CoreXY alternatives deserve comparison. Not a good fit for buyers wanting plug-and-play, quiet out-of-box operation or cutting-edge speed without upgrades. Alternatives for comparison: ELEGOO Neptune 4 Max at $389 for 420 × 420 × 480 mm, Sovol SV08 at $549 for 350 × 350 × 345 mm, and Anycubic Kobra 3 Max at a clearance price around $429-493 depending on configuration.

Which model this is

This page covers the original 2019 Creality Ender-5 Plus, ASIN B07Z62688K, a 350 × 350 × 400 mm open-frame FDM printer with an 8-bit Creality V2.2 board and pre-installed BLTouch. It is not the Ender-5 (non-Plus), Ender-5 Pro, Ender-5 Max, Ender-5 S1, or a stock CoreXY machine.
