Summary

A glossy silk-finish PLA in Purple, on a 1 kg spool, sold by Creality’s US store at $19.99 for decorative prints. Check the profile before you print: silk PLA is more brittle than standard PLA, and the temperature and speed guidance varies by source.

Strengths

  • Glossy silk finish that hides layer lines.
  • Normal silk-PLA pricing from Creality’s US store.
  • Bulk pricing falls to $14.99 a spool at 20.
  • Vacuum-sealed packaging with a desiccant and a reusable bag.
  • A wide 190–230 °C nozzle range suits most printers.

Weaknesses

  • No independent instrumented test of this filament was found.
  • Purple carried a restock tag at check time, so availability varies by color.
  • Silk PLA is more brittle with weaker layer bonding than standard PLA.
  • Owners report fragile layers and stringing on functional prints.
  • The store review figure pools all twelve colors, so Purple-specific feedback is limited.

Printing it

Retailer and data-sheet pages citing Creality’s specs agree on a nozzle range of 190–230 °C, a diameter of 1.75 mm at ±0.02 mm, and a tensile strength of 35 MPa with bending strength of 67 MPa. They disagree on the details: bed temperature is 50–60 °C on one data sheet and 0–60 °C on another, and print speed is 40–80 mm/s on one and 40–100 mm/s on another, so treat any linked profile as a starting point and run your own temperature tower.

Silk PLA strength and layer bonding

Silk PLA gets its shine from additives that interfere with layer bonding, so it is more brittle than standard PLA. Owners on r/3Dprinting describe silk prints with fragile layer adhesion and a tradeoff between weak layers and stringing. These are material-class signals rather than a measured defect rate. Print hotter and slow the outer wall if you want both the shine and stronger layers.

Creality’s US store lists the 1 kg spool at $19.99 against a $28.99 compare-at (2026-10-16). Bulk pricing drops to $16.99 at 5 spools, $15.99 at 10 and $14.99 at 20, and a 2 kg sample pack of 8 × 250 g spools is $39.98. A third-party marketplace listing has appeared at $14.99. Silk PLA from other brands often costs more per kg, so Creality’s price is competitive, but there is no independent test behind it, so you are relying on the store’s own reviews.

Is it worth it?

At $19.99, and better at $14.99 in bulk, it is a fair buy for figurines, vases and display pieces. It is the wrong material for functional or load-bearing parts, where silk’s brittleness and weak layer bonding are a real liability. If you need strength, buy PLA+ or PETG instead of paying a silk premium.
