Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

The Creality CR-Laser Falcon 10 W is an open-frame, manually focused 455 ± 5 nm diode laser engraver and cutter with a 400 × 415 mm work area, aimed at hobbyists with a ventilated workshop. Check your setup before you buy: it is a Class 4 open laser with no enclosure, no fume extraction and no fireproof bed in the box, and the 6 mm basswood / 5 mm black acrylic one-pass claims are promotional limits, not verified cuts.

Strengths

  • Large 400 × 415 mm work area cuts multiple ornaments and personalizes larger wood items without a bed upgrade.
  • Compatible with free LaserGRBL and paid LightBurn on Windows and macOS, and it runs offline from a TF card.
  • Included accessories (goggles, TF card, plywood samples, tools) let beginners start immediately.
  • Three-part removable legs allow engraving taller objects, up to 150 mm of lift.

Weaknesses

  • Open-frame Class 4 laser: no enclosure, no fume extraction and no fireproof bed are included, so ventilation, eye protection and a safe surface are your job.
  • Manual focus, a single button and beeps take getting used to; there is no display and no camera-assisted positioning.
  • Stepper motors whine and the air-assist pump hums; owners report damping the pump.
  • The tilt sensor can false-trigger on vibration, and some owners disable it.
  • USB connection works only with a USB-A to USB-C data cable; USB-C to USB-C and charging cables do not.
  • Customer support is effectively unresponsive according to owners, and the manual is poorly translated.

Which model this is

This page covers the original Creality CR-Laser Falcon with the 10 W laser module, machine identifier 1005010037 on the manufacturer’s US-plug listing. It is not the 5 W CR-Laser Falcon, the Falcon Pro 10 W with air assist, the Falcon 2, the Falcon A1 or the Falcon A1C, which have different work areas, laser powers and enclosures. The 5 W and 10 W modules share the frame but differ in focus bar and smoke filter. No US ASIN was verified for this older model; US buyers may be buying remaining stock or used units.

Safety and ventilation

The laser is Class 4, so eye protection and a fireproof, ventilated work surface are mandatory; the 10 W module has no smoke filter. Hands-on reviewers report visible smoke and soot on wood even on simple cuts, with stronger fumes on detailed projects. Air assist reduces deposits but does not remove airborne gases or replace outdoor exhaust. Never operate it unattended, and avoid PVC, vinyl and unknown plastics, which can release toxic fumes. Protective goggles shipped with the machine do not make an open Class 4 beam harmless to observers.

Problems owners report

Independent hands-on testers found wavy engravings when the X-axis pulley or belt was misadjusted; tightening the pulley and belt and reducing acceleration fixed their sample. Owners also report blurry or doubled engravings after initial success, traced in at least one case to an extremely loose X-axis belt, plus flashing or lost marking power after software changes. Before blaming the laser head, check belt tension, pulleys, wheel play, workholding and focus. A few owners report accuracy problems on new machines, homing-corner sticking and laser power weakening over time, with required speed dropping from 4 mm/s to 3.2 mm/s in one report. Dirty or damaged protective lenses can also reduce power; the manual recommends cleaning with a dustless cloth and suitable alcohol.

Running costs and accessories

There is no subscription to run the machine. Optional costs include a replacement protective lens at $29.99 (Creality Falcon US, discounted from $74.99; Creality Store lists $59.99), an air-assist kit at $63.20, a full 500 × 500 mm honeycomb workbench at $99.99, a 320 mm cutting-table kit at $49.99, a protective cover at $49, a protection enclosure at $59, replacement goggles at $9.99 and laser-safety glasses at $29.99, plus an EF1 exhaust fan at $159. LightBurn requires a paid license after its trial; LaserGRBL is free. Material blanks, ventilation and consumables vary by project. One accessory example totals $427.19 before tax: $205 unit plus $63.20 air assist plus $59 enclosure plus $99.99 honeycomb, excluding exhaust, eye protection and software. Electricity is modest: a hypothetical 72 W continuous draw for 5 hours a week for 52 weeks is 18.72 kWh, about $3.74 at $0.20 per kWh, before conversion losses and exhaust.

Creality’s US store listed the original CR-Laser Falcon 10 W at $205 in October 2026, crossed out from $379, marked Pre-Order with an ETA of October 26, 2026, so it is a preorder price rather than verified immediate stock. Basic, Protection, Extension and All-in-One kits are separate bundles at $299, $319, $349 and $399. An older manufacturer/wholesale listing shows US plug 1005010037 at $399. The 5 W variant lists at $119, the Falcon A1C Basic 5 W at $269, and the enclosed Falcon A1 10 W at $466 to $549 depending on variant. At or below about $190 new with confirmed stock is a good buy; $190 to $230 is defensible if you already have safe exhaust, goggles and a suitable bed; above about $300 for the open base unit, compare an enclosed Falcon A1C instead.

Is it worth it?

Probably yes for a cost-conscious hobbyist who wants a large 400 × 415 mm field and accepts manual focus, open-laser safety and self-support through YouTube and Reddit. It is a poor fit if you expect a sealed Class 1 desktop appliance, included fume extraction, a fire-resistant work surface, automatic camera alignment or effortless cutting of clear acrylic and bare metal. Blue diode lasers cannot effectively cut transparent acrylic; dark acrylic and wood are more suitable, and the machine marks some coated or anodized metal surfaces but is not a bare-metal cutter.
