Summary

A brushed 1/2-inch cordless drill/driver kit in the CRAFTSMAN V20 system, with one compact 1.3 Ah battery, a charger and a reversible bit. It handles furniture assembly, hardware and moderate drilling at a low price, but the single small battery and the brushed motor set its limits.

Strengths

  • Credible everyday performance: TechGearLab bought and tested the exact kit in 2022 and scored it 61, driving ordinary screws with good depth control.
  • It can drill thin steel: a 1/4-inch twist bit crossed 16-gauge steel in about 1.5 seconds in that test.
  • The two-speed transmission finished larger holes in low gear, and the slipping clutch stops over-driving screws.
  • A real 1/2-inch keyless chuck takes common large-shank bits without a key.
  • V20 batteries also run compatible CRAFTSMAN tools, useful if you already own the platform.
  • Official manual, registration and model-specific parts access, plus a three-year limited warranty.

Weaknesses

  • One 1.3 Ah battery is the main limit: in testing it completed four full cycles and almost a fifth, where the best drills in the group did more than ten.
  • Charging takes 58 minutes, and work stops unless you buy a second pack.
  • Heavy drilling stalls; a 5-inch hole saw took about 55 seconds and the side vents got uncomfortably hot.
  • It left the tester’s largest lag screw about 5/8 inch proud.
  • The LED is partially shadowed by the chuck at the drilling point.
  • Owner reviews report chuck slip and wobble and one kit that arrived without a chuck, though no failure rate is published.

Battery and runtime

The kit ships with one compact pack, and the capacity claim is inconsistent: the product title says 1.5 Ah while the official kit breakdown says 1.3 Ah, and the independent test used a 1.3 Ah pack. In that test the pack completed four full charge cycles of repeated drilling and almost finished a fifth; the best drills in the comparison group exceeded ten. A full charge took 58 minutes, so a single-battery owner stops working while it charges. A genuine 2.0 Ah replacement, the CMCB202, is listed at $49 at Lowe’s, and CRAFTSMAN says it gives up to 1.5× the runtime of the 1.3 Ah CMCB201, though not by that factor in every workload. There is no subscription and no fixed annual parts schedule; the manual says the battery and charger are not user-serviceable.

Drilling and driving limits

TechGearLab’s February 2022 test is the best picture of what the kit can do. A 1/4-inch twist bit crossed 16-gauge steel in about 1.5 seconds; a 1/2-inch bit took 5–7 seconds and sometimes bound as it broke through. The 5-inch hole saw took about 55 seconds, with the high gear binding and low gear needed to finish, and air from the side vents became uncomfortably hot. The largest lag screw was left about 5/8 inch proud. The tester also found the LED shadowed by the chuck at the point of drilling.

Parts and running costs

Batteries and bits are the replaceable items. A genuine 2.0 Ah CMCB202 is $49 at Lowe’s, and the 2.0 Ah CMCB202-HPG variant is also listed at $49. The 4.0 Ah CMCB204 is compatible but had no verified US price. A CMCB104 charger is listed separately at $99, which is more than a new complete kit is worth in most cases. The kit includes one double-sided screwdriver bit, not a drill-bit set. On electricity, a 1.3 Ah, 18 V pack holds 23.4 Wh nominal; at an assumed 70% wall-to-battery efficiency each full-capacity replenishment is about 0.0334 kWh, so 50 cycles a year is about 1.67 kWh, or $0.33 at an assumed $0.20/kWh. That is an illustration, not a measured draw.

Is it worth it?

At $50–$60 all-in before tax it is a good beginner buy if one battery is enough. From $65 to $80 it is acceptable when you already run V20 and want the full kit. From $90 to $100 it is weak without a second battery: the $49 spare makes a $99 purchase cost $148 before tax, more than the $129 brushless Ryobi ONE+ HP PBLDD01K1 kit at Home Depot, which includes a 2.0 Ah battery and charger. Above $100, favor a newer brushless kit or a platform you already own.

Retail pricing for the exact kit is murky. An Ace Hardware page has indexed $99 regular with a $59 Ace Rewards promotion, but that snapshot predates this check and the promotion is not confirmed active. Lowe’s recognizes the item but shows pricing only after you enter a store or ZIP. Acme Tools shows the price in cart, and HomeBase USA reported $99 in stock in October 2026. If you already own V20 batteries, the CRAFTSMAN brushless RP CMCD713C1 or the newer CMCD702D1 kit are same-platform options.

Which model this is

This page covers the CMCD700C1 kit: the CMCD700 brushed, non-hammer 1/2-inch drill/driver with one V20 battery, a charger and a reversible bit. Do not substitute the newer CMCD702D1 kit with its 2.0 Ah battery, the brushless RP CMCD713C1, a hammer drill or a two-tool combo. Verify the battery on the box, because the title and the official kit list disagree between 1.5 Ah and 1.3 Ah. The kit’s UPC is 885911548694.
