Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

CMCD714 is a compact 1/2-in cordless drill/driver on Craftsman’s V20 20V MAX platform, built for tight-space drilling and driving. Check the weight and clutch count before you buy: Craftsman does not publish either for this model.

Strengths

  • The 6.2-in head reaches into electrical boxes and cabinet interiors.
  • Brushless motor, 2-speed gearbox and a ratcheting 1/2-in chuck cover drilling and driving.
  • Ships as a kit with one 2.0Ah battery and a charger, ready to use out of the box.
  • Backed by a 3-year limited warranty.
  • Runs on the shared V20 platform, so existing Craftsman 20V batteries and chargers work.
  • Positioned for residential drilling and screwdriving, without a hammer mode to weigh it down.

Weaknesses

  • No instrumented professional test of the exact CMCD714 exists, so torque and runtime under load are unmeasured.
  • The kit ships with only one 2.0Ah battery, and owners mention wanting more in the box.
  • Craftsman does not publish weight, overall dimensions, clutch count or an absolute power rating for this model.
  • “Up to 77 holes per charge” and “40% more power” are conditional benchmark claims, not universal figures.
  • No kickback control is listed, something compact-class competitors typically lack.
  • Masonry work needs the separate CMCD716 compact hammer drill.

Tight spaces and intended use

The 6.2-in head is the point of this drill: it is 25% shorter than the previous CMCD700, which is what gets it into electrical rough-ins and cabinet fitting. The manual positions it for residential drilling and screwdriving, and there is no hammer mode, so masonry work belongs to the CMCD716 compact hammer drill. The low-speed setting turns at 0–600 RPM no-load; the high-speed setting reaches 0–1,900 RPM.

What independent testing covers

No instrumented professional test of the exact CMCD714 was found. Consumer Reports lab-tested the predecessor CMCD710C1 in 2020 and found it fast, moderately powerful and moderately long on runtime. None of that measures this drill.

Batteries, warranty and running costs

The kit includes one CMCB202 2.0Ah battery and a CMCB101 charger. Extra CMCB202-class 2.0Ah batteries and V20 chargers are sold separately, and CMCB204 4.0Ah two-packs exist for the platform. Because the V20 platform is shared across Craftsman 20V tools, a battery or charger you already own carries over. The warranty is a flat 3-year limited warranty; the manual contains a Three-Year Limited Warranty section and points service and inspection to factory or authorized service centers.

Is it worth it?

For homeowners and light professional use that value a short head over hammer-drill capability, the CMCD714 is a reasonable compact drill/driver. The shared V20 battery platform and the 3-year limited warranty keep long-term ownership costs down. If you need masonry work, the separate CMCD716 compact hammer drill is the right tool; if you want published weight, clutch count and independent test data, confirm those specs before you buy.

Which model this is

This page covers the compact CMCD714 drill/driver, sold as kit CMCD714D1 with one 2.0Ah battery and a charger. Do not merge it with the full-size V20 Brushless RP drill CMCD713 (350 UWO, 7.6-in length, 15 clutch settings) or the CMCD725 (495 UWO, 2,000 RPM); those are mechanically distinct models.
