Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A corded 2.5-gallon wet/dry shop vacuum for light household cleanup, car interiors, workbench debris and small nonflammable spills. Check the nameplate before you buy: CRAFTSMAN sells the same CMXEVBE17250 under both 1.75 and 2.5 peak HP pages, and the older spec sheet lists 1.75 peak HP with up to 51 CFM.

Strengths

  • True wet pickup for nonflammable spills, with float shutoff described in the 2021 manual.
  • Two jobs in one unit: moving the hose to the rear port blows debris out of crevices and work areas.
  • Low storage burden: about 7.2 lb, with handle, short integrated cord wrap and accessory holder.
  • Named consumable: genuine CMXZVBE38737 is identified in the manual and sold as a three-pack through CRAFTSMAN and Ace.
  • Three-year limited warranty for qualifying defects in an original consumer purchase.

Weaknesses

  • Dust can blow out of the exhaust port if the filter sleeve slips under its retaining band; torn or wet bags make it worse.
  • Stiff 5-ft hose can tip the light canister while cleaning and limit reach.
  • Friction-fit hose and nozzles can slip off when pulled.
  • Basic filtration: conventional filter bag, not stated as HEPA; not for drywall dust, fireplace ash or fine particulates.
  • Short working radius: about 10.25-ft cord plus 5-ft hose.
  • No wheels or floor wand included; not a substitute for a full-size carpet vacuum.

Verified specifications

Capacity2.5-gallon nominal drum volume; a float shuts off suction before liquid reaches the motor, so actual wet volume is lower.
Motorconflicting 1.75 vs 2.5 peak HP pages for the same SKU; the 2019 specification sheet lists up to 51 CFM; the 2021 manual lists 120 V, 3 A, 60 Hz, 400 W.
Hose5 ft long, 1-1/4 in diameter, friction/twist fit; inlet and rear blower port both accept it.
Included toolscrevice nozzle and utility nozzle. No floor wand, wheels, powered brushroll or HEPA cartridge is specified in the standard carton.
Power cord123.0 in (10.25 ft); requires a grounded 120 V outlet. Corded only, no battery.
Weight7.2 lb (about 3.3 kg) per the earlier spec sheet; retailer listings vary slightly.
Blowermove the hose to the rear port and twist to secure; not an air compressor or leaf-blower substitute. Eye protection required.
Filterfabric/paper-style sleeve over the motor’s filter cage, held by an elastic retainer band. Dry pickup needs it installed; wet pickup needs it removed, with the float and cage retained.

Which model this is

This page covers the CRAFTSMAN CMXEVBE17250, a 2.5-gallon corded wet/dry vac; the manual uses model suffix CMXEVBE172500. CRAFTSMAN’s own site exposes two pages for the same SKU, labeled 2.5 peak HP and 1.75 peak HP, and even the 1.75 page’s body text says 2.5 HP. The 2019 specification sheet says 1.75 peak HP and up to 51 CFM, while the 2021 manual says 120 V, 3 A, 60 Hz, 400 W. Peak horsepower is a dynamometer marketing rating, not continuous power, so confirm the box or rating plate before comparing. Do not confuse it with the CRAFTSMAN V20 CMCV002B cordless 2-gallon vac, which is a different, tool-only model.

Filter and dust control

The filter is a fabric or paper sleeve over the motor’s filter cage, held by an elastic band. For dry pickup it must be installed correctly; tears, gaps or poor band position let debris re-enter the room through the blower port. For wet pickup the manufacturer strongly recommends removing the bag while keeping the float and filter cage, and replacing any bag that gets wet before dry work resumes. Owners syndicated from CRAFTSMAN to Walmart describe the sleeve slipping under the band and exhausting dust. The fix is to unplug, reseat a dry undamaged CMXZVBE38737 bag fully over the cage, position the band between the printed marks, keep the sealing area clean, and replace torn or wet bags. If dust still leaks, stop dry pickup and contact the warranty provider. Frequency of the problem is unmeasured, so treat it as a known risk rather than a defect rate. Replacement sleeves are CMXZVBE38737, a three-pack with band, for 2–2.5-gallon vacs; at Ace they were $11.99 in October 2026 and $10.99 at McCoy’s on a special-order listing.

Wet pickup and day-to-day use

For nonflammable spills, remove the filter bag, keep the float and cage, and dry the drum afterward; this is not a switch-instantly model. The float shuts off suction before the drum fills, and no exact wet-gallon trip point is published. The unit has no wheels or floor wand, so it suits spots, benches and vehicle seats more than full-room floors, and it does not mechanically agitate embedded pet hair. Noise is not precisely verified; the manual recommends hearing protection during prolonged or noisy use, and third-party retailer material suggests about 72 dB without an independent standardized measurement. If you use an extension cord, it must be grounded, sound and at least 16 AWG, with no wet connections. The working radius is about 10.25-ft cord plus 5-ft hose.

Running costs

There is no mandatory service cost: no battery, subscription, network account or scheduled motor service. The main consumable is the CMXZVBE38737 filter sleeve. At $11.99 for three, two bags in a year cost about $8.00, six about $23.98 and twelve about $47.96, before tax; actual spend comes in multiples of three, and a correctly cleaned undamaged dry filter may last longer. Electricity is modest: the manual’s 400 W rating works out to about 20.8 kWh and about $4.16 a year at one hour a week and $0.20 per kWh, or 5.2 kWh and about $1.04 at fifteen minutes a week. These are nameplate calculations, not measured wall power. Other costs—water, cleaning, extension cord, repairs—are owner-dependent, and no representative annual average was verified.

Is it worth it?

At $35 or less new it is a particularly good buy if the filter and nozzle kit are complete; $36–$45 is good value; $46–$50 is normal given Ace quotes; above $55 it gets unattractive unless immediate local pickup or seller service matters. At $60 or more, compare the Stinger HD2025 at $44.98 from The Home Depot and the Armor All VOM205P at about $39.97 on Walmart instead of assuming a higher peak-HP label means more suction. Neither comparison establishes a head-to-head performance winner. Ace Hardware listed the CMXEVBE17250 at $49.99 in October 2026; Ward’s Ace and Allendale Ace also at $49.99, while K&B Ace listed $55.99. A verified twelve-month median or promotional low was not found, and an older $29.99 figure from tracking sites was not validated at a seller checkout. The CRAFTSMAN V20 cordless 2-gallon vac at $129 from Ace is a different, tool-only model.

Support and warranty

The three-year limited warranty is provided by Emerson Tool Company, begins at the original consumer buyer’s purchase date, and ends if ownership transfers. For covered manufacturing or material defects under normal instructed household use, remedy may be repair, replacement or refund after inspection. It does not cover normal wear or replacement filters, hoses, power cords and accessories; accidents or misuse; unauthorized repair; motor burnout from an uncleared blockage; exceeding intended capacity; or use contrary to the manual. CRAFTSMAN’s site offers web chat and an online support form; the manual also lists a customer service phone number. A second 2025 complaint shows CRAFTSMAN reps responding with apologies, not proof a replacement was issued. No measured claim acceptance or denial rate was verified.
