CRAFTSMAN CMXEVBE17250: problems, parts and running costs
Checked: 2026-10-30
Summary
A 2.5-gallon corded wet/dry vac for light cleanup, car interiors and small nonflammable spills, with a 5-ft hose and 10.25-ft cord. The recurring trouble is dust bypass when the filter sleeve slips under its retaining band, plus short reach and tipping from the stiff hose. Yearly cost is roughly $8-47.96 in filters (multiples of the $11.99 three-pack) plus about $1-4 in electricity; it is a good buy at $35 or less new, fair to $50, and worth comparing against the Stinger HD2025 and Armor All VOM205P above $55.
Common problems and fixes
- Dust discharged from the exhaust port — owners syndicated from CRAFTSMAN to Walmart report the filter sleeve slipping under its retaining band and exhausting dust; the manual warns tears, gaps or poor band position let debris re-enter through the blower port. Fix: unplug, reseat a dry undamaged CMXZVBE38737 bag fully over the cage, position the band between the printed marks, keep the sealing area clean, and replace torn or wet bags; if dust still leaks, stop dry pickup and contact the warranty provider. Not a measured defect rate. [3][11]
- Premature electrical or switch failure (anecdotal) — one owner reported the vacuum stopped after nine months (October 2025) and another a failed-feeling on/off switch about four months after purchase (October 2023); these are two individual cases, not a validated defect rate, and the warranty permits inspection. [3][11]
- Slip-off friction-fit hose and nozzles — individual owners and the Vacuwiz tester found connections can separate when tugged. Workaround: twist and push firmly and avoid dragging the body by the hose. [1][3][10][11]
- Clogged filter and reduced suction — fine allowed dust needs more frequent cleaning or replacement, and a wet sleeve clogs quickly; clear blocked hose or inlet and verify the filter before blaming the motor. [3]
- Motor damage from overfill or dust bypass — the manufacturer cautions against running after the float shuts off airflow or vacuuming dry debris without the filter sleeve; these are misuse risks, not established burnout rates. [3]
- Fine-dust incompatibility — the manual prohibits drywall dust, cold fireplace ash and similar very fine dust; no sealed HEPA accessory or conversion was found, so it is a safety limitation rather than a defect. [3][11]
- Short working radius — about 10.25-ft cord plus 5-ft hose; car-trunk cleanup often needs re-plugging or an extension, which must be grounded, sound and at least 16 AWG with no wet connections. [1][3][10]
Parts and consumables
- CMXZVBE38737 dry filter sleeve (three-pack with retainer band) — $11.99 at Ace Hardware and $10.99 at McCoy’s, October 2026; for dry pickup only; replace when clogged, torn, wet or unserviceable. About $4.00 per filter at Ace before tax. [3][7][8][9]
- Extension cord (optional) — not included; if used it must be grounded, sound and at least 16 AWG. [3]
Yearly running cost
No mandatory service cost: no battery, subscription, network account or scheduled motor service. The main consumable is the CMXZVBE38737 sleeve. At $11.99 for three, consuming 2 bags in a year is about $8.00, 6 bags about $23.98 and 12 bags about $47.96, before tax; actual spend comes in multiples of three and a correctly cleaned undamaged dry filter may last longer. Electricity from the 400 W rating is about 20.8 kWh and about $4.16 a year at one hour a week and $0.20 per kWh, or 5.2 kWh and about $1.04 at fifteen minutes a week. These are nameplate calculations, not measured wall power. Other costs are owner-dependent and no representative annual average was verified.
When it is a good buy
Ace Hardware listed the CMXEVBE17250 at $49.99 in October 2026; Ward’s Ace and Allendale Ace also at $49.99, while K&B Ace listed $55.99. At $35 or less new it is a particularly good buy if the filter and nozzle kit are complete; $36-45 is good value; $46-50 is normal given Ace quotes; above $55 it is unattractive unless immediate local pickup or seller service matters. At $60 or more, compare the Stinger HD2025 at $44.98 from The Home Depot (October 2026) and the Armor All VOM205P at about $39.97 on Walmart (October 2026). The CRAFTSMAN V20 cordless 2-gallon vac at $129 from Ace is a different tool-only model. A verified twelve-month median or promotional low was not found.
