Summary
Coway’s Airmega Mighty AP-1512HH is a compact four-stage room air purifier that Wirecutter has recommended since 2015, with measured particle removal that ranks among the strongest in its size. It clears particles well but handles odors and VOCs poorly, so check whether you need smell control before buying.
Strengths
- Independent tests found strong particle removal: 99.7% of 0.3-micron particles at the top speed.
- Air Purifier First recorded about a 96% air-quality improvement in a 320 sq ft room over 60 minutes at max speed.
- Wirecutter has recommended the Mighty since 2015 and tested it against more than 50 competitors.
- The washable pre-filter and snap-in filter design make maintenance simple enough for a teenager.
- Coway backs it with a 3-year limited warranty, and long-term owners report years of use without failure.
- Low speed is quiet at 41.4 dBA measured by Air Purifier First.
Weaknesses
- The carbon stage is a thin carbon-coated fiber filter, not carbon pellets, so odor and VOC handling is weak.
- Multiple owners say it does little for cooking smells.
- Top-speed noise is loud: 57 dB measured by Live Science and 63.5 dBA by Air Purifier First.
- There is no sleep mode, and owners complain about bright indicator lights at night.
- Replacement filters run about $57–65 a year from Coway.
- Several owners report new HEPA filters offgassing a strong plastic smell.

How it cleans the air
The AP-1512HH is a four-stage unit: a washable pre-filter, a deodorization filter coated with carbon, a Green True HEPA filter, and an optional bipolar ionizer that ships off by default. Coway claims the HEPA stage captures 99.97% of airborne allergens and particles as small as 0.3 microns.
Independent measurements back up the particle case. Live Science, testing in a 220 sq ft room, removed 99.7% of 0.3-micron particles and 97.2% of 2.5-micron particles at the top fan speed. Air Purifier First, in a 320 sq ft room over 60 minutes at max speed, recorded PM2.5 falling from 113.8 to 4.7 µg/m³ — about a 96% air-quality improvement — and cleared a smoke-filled box in 18 seconds. House Fresh measured a dust CADR of 247 CFM, close to Coway’s 246. Wirecutter has recommended the Mighty since 2015 and says it tested it against more than 50 competitors.
Odors, noise and the carbon filter
The weak point is smells. The carbon stage is a thin fibrous filter coated with carbon, not loose carbon pellets, and multiple owners and testers describe limited odor capacity. One owner wrote that it “does not get rid of odors whatsoever” and that the second filter has barely any sprayed-on carbon. Air Purifier First scored odor neutralization as a clear weakness, and House Fresh found it worse than the Winix 5500-2 on kitchen odors.
Noise is the other tradeoff. Live Science measured 57 dB at the top speed and called it “too noisy”; Air Purifier First measured 63.5 dBA at speed 3 versus 41.4 dBA at speed 1. There is no sleep mode, and bright indicator lights draw owner complaints for bedrooms.
Running costs and upkeep
Expect to replace the deodorization filter every 6 months and the HEPA filter every 12 months, and to clean the pre-filter roughly every two weeks and the air-quality sensor every 2 months. Coway’s genuine filter set — one HEPA plus two deodorization filters — is listed at $59.79, marked down from $64.99, on Coway’s store; Tom’s Guide lists replacement filters at a $57 MSRP.
Electricity is modest at low speed and noticeable at high. Air Purifier First measured about $0.31 a month at speed 1 and about $6.05 a month at max speed running 24/7 at $0.12 per kWh. House Fresh worked out a full year at $123.63, combining $83.64 of electricity at top speed 24/7 at $0.174 per kWh with $39.99 of filters. The ionizer adds about 1.2 W.
Is it worth it?
Coway sells it direct at $239.99, which is fair but not exceptional. Consumer Reports listed the model from $154.98, CNN saw Coway direct at $169 in 2024, and Live Science described it as available from under $200 back in 2022; at those levels the measured performance, the 3-year warranty and the simple maintenance are strong. Tom’s Guide lists a $229 MSRP and Wirecutter’s buying options sat at $230–$240.
If odor control matters, a charcoal-pellet design will do more. Coway’s own 230/240 line and Winix models are built around pelleted carbon, and House Fresh found the 5500-2 better on kitchen odors.
