Coway Airmega Mighty AP-1512HH: problems, parts and running costs
Checked: 2026-10-19
Summary
The AP-1512HH is a compact four-stage air purifier that Wirecutter has recommended since 2015, with strong measured particle removal such as 99.7% of 0.3-micron particles at the top speed in one test. Its weak points are odors and VOCs, loud top-speed operation and roughly $57-65 a year in filters. It is a good buy at or below about $170 and only fair at its $229-240 list price.
Common problems and fixes
- Weak odor and VOC control — the carbon stage is a thin carbon-coated fiber filter, not carbon pellets, so odor capacity is limited; owners say it does little for cooking smells, one writing that it does not get rid of odors whatsoever, and Air Purifier First scored odor neutralization as a clear weakness. There is no fix for this model; if smells matter, a charcoal-pellet design such as Coway’s own 230/240 line or a Winix unit does more. [4][12]
- Loud at the top speed — Live Science measured 57 dB and called level 3 too noisy, and Air Purifier First measured 63.5 dBA at speed 3 versus 41.4 dBA at speed 1. Run it at speeds 1-2 or Auto; there is no sleep mode. [3][4]
- New HEPA filters offgassing — multiple owners report a strong plastic smell from new filters, in one case headache-inducing, and commenters call replacement units a crapshoot on this issue. No fix is documented. [10][12]
- Bright indicator lights at night — a recurring owner complaint, and the model has no sleep mode; the air-quality light can be turned off by holding the ionizer button for 3 seconds. [3][4]
- Replacement filter cost and availability — filters run about $57-65 a year, and some owners report difficulty tracking them down. [3][6][9]
- Eco mode stops cleaning silently — the fan turns off after the air stays purified for 30 minutes, so the unit stops cleaning until the sensor detects more pollution. [1][4]
Parts and consumables
- Deodorization (carbon) filter — 6-month life; only one is included in the box even though it needs 6-month replacement. [1][4]
- Green True HEPA filter — 12-month life; Coway claims it captures 99.97% of particles as small as 0.3 microns. [1][4]
- Genuine filter set (1 HEPA plus 2 deodorization filters) — $59.79, marked down from $64.99, on Coway’s store (October 2026), fitting the AP-1512HH and 200M; Tom’s Guide lists replacement filters at a $57 MSRP. [6][9]
- Third-party filters — Jinhui generics cleaned smoke more slowly in one owner test, while House Fresh measured a Pureburg generic set doing the same 26-minute room clear as the OEM set. [5][12]
Yearly running cost
- Filters: $59.79-$64.99 per year on Coway’s store (HEPA every 12 months plus two 6-month deodorization filters, October 2026); Tom’s Guide lists a $57 MSRP. [6][9]
- Electricity: about $0.31 a month at speed 1 and about $6.05 a month at max speed running 24/7 at $0.12 per kWh (Air Purifier First). House Fresh worked out a full year at $123.63, combining $83.64 of electricity at top speed 24/7 at $0.174 per kWh with $39.99 of filters. The ionizer adds about 1.2 W. [4][5]
When it is a good buy
- At or below about $170 it is strong value: Consumer Reports listed the model from $154.98 and CNN saw Coway direct at $169 in 2024. [7][8]
- $171-220 is fair-to-good; still reasonable if the Auto and Eco modes and the compact footprint matter. [1]
- $221-240 is fair: Tom’s Guide lists a $229 MSRP and Wirecutter’s buying options sat at $230-240, while Coway’s own store lists $239.99 (October 2026). [1][2][6]
- Above $240 it is weak for new units, only justifiable for a specific deal or finish. [1]
- Alternatives: Coway’s own 230/240 line and Winix models use pelleted carbon and handle odors better (House Fresh found the Winix 5500-2 better on kitchen odors), and the app-connected AP-1512HHS is the pick if you want smart features. [1][4][5][12]
