Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A 1.7 L borosilicate-glass electric kettle with a hidden heating plate, a blue indicator light, automatic shut-off and boil-dry protection, sold by Cosori with a 2-year warranty. Check the model code on the base before you buy: this line has circulated as CO171-GK, CO178-GK and CGK-G173, and the current manual covers only CGK-G173.

Strengths

  • America’s Test Kitchen bought the kettle at retail and named it a Best Buy, measuring 5 min 24 sec to boil a quart of room-temperature water.
  • It is light for its capacity: 5 lb 10½ oz full, against 6 lb 3⅜ oz for the OXO Brew Cordless Glass Electric Kettle.
  • The whole carafe lights up purplish-blue during heating and goes dark at the boil.
  • Automatic shut-off and boil-dry protection come as standard.
  • A 2-year limited warranty and 30-day returns are stated by Cosori.
  • The wide lid lets you reach the glass interior with a paper towel.

Weaknesses

  • The 304 stainless-steel filter is fixed in the lid; Cosori warns that removing it will break it.
  • The handle is bulky and a little uncomfortable, especially for small hands.
  • The measuring marks printed on the glass are small and hard to read.
  • The short spout makes precise pouring harder than on a kettle with a longer pour.
  • There is no temperature control and no keep-warm function.
  • Limescale is routine: the manual asks for weekly descaling if you use the kettle often.

Boil time and how the tests were run

America’s Test Kitchen timed the kettle boiling one quart of room-temperature water and averaged 5 min 24 sec, against 4 min 59 sec for the OXO Brew Cordless Glass Electric Kettle, which ATK rated higher. The same test bought the kettles at retail, blind-tasted the boiled water, made pour-over coffee to judge the spout, hand-washed the interiors and ran 365 batches in its top models to simulate a year of daily use.

Real Homes, testing the same line in 2023, measured 0.8 L boiling in 2 min 40 s and a full boil in about seven minutes; the Cosori page says “about 3 minutes”. The spread is fill volume and starting temperature, not a defect, and ATK’s controlled figure is the one to trust.

Cleaning and running costs

The filter cannot be taken out for cleaning, which Real Homes flags and Cosori confirms. Descale at least weekly with frequent use and before and after long storage, using vinegar and water, lemon juice and water, or baking soda and water, then a clean-water boil. There are no capsules, pods or proprietary filters to buy; the only running cost is electricity plus a descaler.

Cosori’s own US store lists the kettle at $25.99, marked down from $27.99. Real Homes’ 2023 guide printed $39.99.

Warranty and repairs

The manual carries a 2-year limited consumer product warranty from Arovast Corporation covering CGK-G173-KUS/WUS/GUS, starting from the original delivery date. Remedies are a refund, repair, replacement with an equal-or-greater-value product or store credit, and normal wear, unauthorized service and commercial use are excluded. Products from unauthorized sellers are not covered. No spare-parts programme appears in Cosori’s catalogue; the cord is the one part the manual says must be replaced by Arovast or a qualified service provider.

Which model this is

This line has carried several codes. The model code this page is filed under is CO178-GK; America’s Test Kitchen’s spec block calls the unit it tested CO171-GK; the current Cosori US manual covers CGK-G173-KUS/WUS/GUS, in black, white and green; and a European listing of the same line is GK172-CO at 2200 W. No source read ties these together explicitly, so check the code stamped on the base and match it to the manual and warranty you need.

The Amazon listing for this kettle is ASIN B08PP48979. Don’t confuse it with the digital CO117-DK kettle, the gooseneck CO108-NK and CS108-NK, the stainless-steel SE151 and SE152, or the tea-infuser CGK-G119TI.

Is it worth it?

At or below $25.99 it is strong value: there is an independent instrumented test record, a 2-year warranty and a 1,500 W / 1.7 L specification. Between $26 and $35 it is still defensible. From $36 to $45 it is fair, close to the $39.99 Real Homes printed in 2023, and above $45 the lack of temperature control and a removable filter makes it weak.
