COROS APEX 4 46mm: problems, parts and running costs
Checked: 2026-10-17
Summary
Owners most often report a MIP screen that looks dim indoors, early-charge battery drain that usually settles after a software update and a full charge cycle, and offline maps that must be downloaded over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi before a trip. Required running costs are $0 a year: core tracking, mapping and training need no COROS subscription and the watch has no compulsory consumable. New from an authorized US seller it is a strong buy at $399 or less, reasonable at $400–449, and ordinary retail at $450–479.
Common problems and fixes
COROS’s limited warranty runs 2 years from activation for watches and 6 months for straps and charging hardware; it covers manufacturing defects under normal use and excludes accident damage, unapproved modifications and purchases from unauthorized resellers. [6]
- Dim MIP screen indoors — the always-on 1.3-inch memory-in-pixel panel is excellent in sunlight but looks dim in poor light, and one owner returned the watch partly over it; this is the display technology, not a fault. [9][11][14]
- Early-charge battery drain and a pairing failure — one purchaser reported Bluetooth/app pairing failure with severe drain within a week of receiving a new watch in December 2025, and several owners described fast first-charge depletion in March 2026; other owners saw normal endurance, and some said a software update and a full charge cycle settled it. No failure rate is published. [12][13]
- Overnight drain and missing gear tracking — an August 2026 owner claimed 18% overnight consumption and a missing shoe-tracking workflow; replies said their watches behaved normally, with no universal fix. [16]
- Calls need the paired phone nearby — the built-in speaker and microphone handle incoming calls only while the phone is connected through the COROS app; the watch cannot originate a call. [4]
- Maps must be prepared first — offline map areas have to be downloaded through the COROS app over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi before a remote trip. [3]
- Crown and buttons can trigger unintentionally — gloves and sleep movement can rotate or press the crown; screen and auto-lock settings reduce it, but some owners dislike the setup work. [10][14]
- Firmware update failures — in June 2026 COROS acknowledged over 100 support tickets in 72 hours across its watch range for defects reported after updates and offered replacements; that figure is not specific to the APEX 4. [15]
Parts and consumables
- COROS APEX 4/NOMAD 24mm nylon band — about $29 from COROS (October 2026); the usual fix when the silicone band’s pin works loose or for comfort. There is no manufacturer-specified replacement interval; replace as needed. [17][8][11]
- COROS USB-C to A2 charging adapter — $20 from COROS (October 2026); one ships with the watch, so replace only a lost or damaged adapter. A standard USB-C cable is not included. [17][3][7]
- COROS watch carabiner — optional mount, $79 from COROS (October 2026). [17]
Yearly running cost
Required subscription is $0 a year: core COROS tracking, mapping and training insights have no paywall, and there is no compulsory disposable consumable. The practical baseline is $0 excluding electricity, tax, accessories and unforeseen failures. An illustrative optional year might add a $29 nylon band or a $20 A2 adapter, but neither has a scheduled annual replacement frequency. [9][17]
When it is a good buy
It lists at $479 at Running Warehouse, REI and Backcountry (October 2026), the same as the October 2025 US launch price. New from an authorized US seller at $399 or less it is a notably attractive buy; $400–449 is reasonable for buyers who specifically want titanium, sapphire and a MIP screen; $450–479 is ordinary retail and worth comparing closely with alternatives. At $499 or more the $499 Suunto Race 2 is the better purchase if a larger 1.5-inch AMOLED display matters more than battery, size and MIP. If you do not need sapphire or titanium, the $349 COROS NOMAD or the $249 COROS PACE 4 may be better value. Buy from COROS or an authorized reseller, because the limited warranty excludes unauthorized resellers. [18][19][20][21][22][6]
