Summary

A two-spool heated dry box for keeping PLA-class filament dry while it prints, with 40/45/50 °C settings, a 6–12 h timer and a real-time humidity display. Check your filament’s drying temperature before you buy: the 50 °C ceiling handles PLA but not PETG, ABS or nylon.

Strengths

  • Two spools warm in one box, handy for PLA plus a second color.
  • Controls are three fixed temperatures and an LCD, with no multi-material menus.
  • Feed-through outlets let you print straight from the closed box.
  • A sealable housing holds filament dry between jobs, not just while heating.
  • Owners report good results drying PLA in humid climates.

Weaknesses

  • The 50 °C ceiling handles PLA but is marginal for PETG and not enough for ABS, nylon or TPU.
  • One owner measured only about 1% humidity reduction after 12 h until the lid was propped open.
  • The display reads optimistic: 50 °C / 26% against an external 41 °C / 33% after 1.5 h.
  • The underside radiates heat, enough that a community member printed spacer feet.
  • No instrumented independent test exists, and the major buying guides skip this model.
  • Comgrow no longer lists it, so current warranty terms for this SKU are undocumented.

Drying temperature and materials

The temperature range is the decision. Owners call 50 °C workable for PLA, marginal for PETG and not high enough for other materials, and Sovol’s own guide lists 65 °C for PETG and ABS, 55 °C for TPU and 75 °C for nylon, all above this ceiling. One owner ran TPU and PETG at 50 °C for 6–8 hours in a roughly 50–55% RH room and saw only a modest humidity improvement that returned near ambient after cooling. If you print anything beyond PLA, this model is out of scope at any price.

Moisture removal and venting

Sealed drying is slow. One owner measured only about 1% humidity reduction after 12 hours and had to prop the lid open, which matches the wider community practice of venting a heated box so moist air can escape. Comgrow’s related SH01 page tells users to open the PTFE outlet plugs during heating. The routine that works is to vent while heating and close up only once the spool and air have cooled. A low humidity reading on a warm display is not proof the spool is dry: one owner saw the reading fall back near ambient after cooling.

Display accuracy and heat

The built-in display reads optimistic. After 1.5 hours an owner logged 41 °C and 33% RH on an external sensor against 50 °C and 26% on the dryer’s own screen, and the successor SH02 shows a similar offset of about 5 °C. The underside radiates enough heat that a community member designed 3D-printed spacer feet to lift the unit. Treat the screen as a rough guide, and rotate spools if you want even heating.

Running costs and consumables

Electricity is cheap on paper. The manual lists a 48 W rated adapter; if that draw held for 8 hours twice a week, a year would use 832 hours and about 39.94 kWh, or $7.99 at $0.20 per kWh. One 8-hour cycle works out to about 0.384 kWh, roughly $0.08. This is an illustration from the nameplate rating, not a wall-meter test. Desiccant is optional: a 10-pack of Dry & Dry indicating silica packets lists at $8.99 at Walmart, and a pack can be recharged and reused. A first-year budget under those assumptions is about $17.

Is it worth it?

The exact old model is gone from Comgrow’s own store, and no first-party price exists for it. Newegg’s marketplace lists a Comgrow-branded 40–50 °C two-spool dryer at $81.88–$86.99, while the Sovol-direct SH01, a similar 50 °C two-spool machine, lists at $39.99. The successor Sovol SH02 lists at $59.99 and heats to 70 °C with a 150 W PTC heater, and Creality’s single-spool Space Pi lists at $66.00 with a 45–70 °C range and a 0–48 h timer. Community threads show the Comgrow chosen at about $47 over a $45 single-spool alternative. At anything near the SH02’s price the newer dryers are the better buy; the old Comgrow only makes sense for a PLA-dominant shop that vents the lid, treats the display as approximate and finds it at its historical under-$50 price.

Repairs, warranty and support

There is no parts catalog for the old model, and no verified Comgrow fan, heater or sensor part numbers or prices. Comgrow’s warranty page lists 14-day direct-store returns and terms by category without naming the dryer, and directs marketplace buyers to the seller; Newegg lists a 30-day seller return window for its listing. A manuals.plus page indexes a “Comgrow Filament Dryer Gen 1” manual but returned a 403 error during this check, so its contents are unverified. One owner’s Comgrow-variant unit failed after about two years with no component identified, and a Sovol SH01 owner replaced a noisy fan after three days, but neither supports a failure rate.

Which model this is

This page covers the first-generation Comgrow dry box, the 40/45/50 °C dual-spool model, which Comgrow no longer sells. It is not the Comgrow SH02 (40–70 °C, 150 W PTC, touchscreen, 98 h timer) or the SH03 (45–85 °C, dual 200 W, four spools) that Comgrow sells now.

The Amazon listing for this model is ASIN B098D366R3.
