Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A budget 1.7-liter glass electric kettle with 1500 W heating, a blue LED ring and a wide mouth that fits your hand for cleaning.

Strengths

  • Wide 3.9-inch opening, so a hand reaches the inside for descaling.
  • Independent lab measurement put 1.5 liters at 7 minutes 34 seconds, fast for a glass carafe.
  • The blue LED ring shows boiling status in a dim kitchen.
  • A 2.1 lb carafe pours with a comfortable wrist angle.
  • Automatic shutoff and boil-dry protection are both standard.
  • A 360-degree swivel base means you can lift the carafe and set it back any way round.

Weaknesses

  • Energy use runs high for the category: 161 Wh to boil 1.5 liters.
  • Unpowered water drops to 200°F within 5 minutes, so it does not hold heat for a long tea service.
  • The limescale filter mesh is fixed inside the hinged lid, not removable at the spout.
  • The flat power cord resists winding neatly into the base storage compartment.
  • Regional SKUs list different external dimensions for the same glass carafe.
  • Nobody has published a long-term failure rate, so treat the thermal switch as untested beyond the first year.

Boiling speed and noise

Independent instrumented testing of the closely related CEKG003 glass variant measured 7 minutes 34 seconds to take 1.5 liters of 80°F water to a rolling boil. Manufacturer specifications quote 3 to 7 minutes depending on how much water you put in, so the top of that range is what a full carafe actually looks like.

The same test measured peak noise at 71.5 dB during the boil, which the testers described as quiet. In practice the kettle announces itself more through the LED ring and the steam than through volume, and the glass body lets you watch the water instead of standing over it.

Energy use and heat retention

This is where the bargain shows. Drawing 161 Wh for a 1.5-liter boil is above average for the category, so the kettle is cheap to buy and steady to run rather than cheap to run.

Heat retention is moderate. Left unpowered in the glass carafe, water cooled from 212°F to 200°F in five minutes. If you brew several cups in a row, pour them soon after the boil; if you want a pot that holds its temperature for a pot of tea, look at a model with an insulated body.

Cleaning and upkeep

Descaling is the main task. The manual calls for a mix of 0.5 L white vinegar and water left in the carafe for over an hour, then boil the mixture and rinse it out. Wipe the exterior with a damp cloth; do not put the carafe base or the power base in water.

Because the limescale filter mesh sits inside the hinged lid instead of at the spout, expect to clean it by hand each time you descale. The wide top opening is the saving grace: your hand fits inside, so scrubbing the glass does not need a brush.

The COMFEE’ US Official Store lists the CKE17L1MBPK at $19.99 and the CEKG003 at $29.99. Shouldit’s independent price monitoring has logged retail transaction points around $22.74. At the lower end this is a strong bargain for a 1.7-liter borosilicate kettle with automatic shutoff; at the higher end it is still fair but not remarkable, since plain glass kettles sell for less elsewhere. Running costs are only the electricity above and occasional white vinegar for descaling.

Which model this is

This page covers the COMFEE’ 1.7L Glass Electric Tea Kettle, model CKE17L1MBPK sold in the US, along with the near-identical CEKG003 glass variant. The CEKG003 shares the 1.7-liter capacity, 1500 W power, borosilicate glass body and core safety features, and it is the variant covered by the independent lab testing cited here. Do not confuse this kettle with the double-wall stainless steel models or the digital temperature-control versions.
