Summary
A budget countertop griddle with a 160 sq in ceramic nonstick surface, a 200–420°F dial and a body that goes in the dishwasher once the temperature probe is pulled. Check the product name first: “removable plates” describes the probe and the drip tray, not interchangeable cooking plates.
Strengths
- Compact 160 sq in surface at 3.75 lb, light enough to move and store.
- The whole griddle body is immersible and dishwasher safe once the probe is pulled.
- A 36 in cord and a control unit that separates so the body can lie flat.
- Documented temperature control from 200 to 420°F with a printed per-food cooking table.
- Widely stocked between $29 and $45 across Chefman, Best Buy and Walmart.
Weaknesses
- No instrumented test of this exact 10 x 16 in model exists.
- The closest lab result is a Not Recommended verdict on the larger 10 x 20 in sibling for among the worst temperature variation in its lineup.
- America’s Test Kitchen also measured roughly ¼ inch side walls that let food and grease spill into the gap between surface and base.
- The listing’s “removable plates” wording is misleading; the cooking plate is fixed.
- One owner reports heating that is not very even, matching the direction of the sibling result.
- At 160 sq in it is below the 200 sq in floor America’s Test Kitchen said it preferred.

What the “removable plates” name really means
The name on the listing is the one thing to read carefully. This griddle has a single fixed cooking plate; what detaches is the temperature-control unit and the slide-out drip tray. The “10 x 16 inch” size is nominal too — the actual cooking surface is 9.8 x 15.7 in. Chefman’s own naming adds another trap: a page titled “All-Purpose Nonstick Large Griddle” carries the small model code RJ23-SM-V3, so match on the model code, never on the product title.
What is tested, and what is not
No instrumented test of the 10 x 16 in unit was found, and no published heat map, dial-accuracy or nonstick-durability measurement exists for it. The closest evidence is America’s Test Kitchen’s February 2026 round-up, which tested the same-platform Chefman Extra-Large 10 x 20 in sibling (RJ23-LG-GREY-WM) and placed it in Not Recommended. ATK reported among the highest temperature variation across the cooking surface in its lineup, with pancakes browning at the edges and staying light in the center, the same on burgers, plus roughly ¼ inch side walls that let food and grease spill over. That is a different size and 1500 W against this model’s 1200 W, so treat it as a caution signal rather than a measurement; the two still share the chassis, the ceramic coating, the 420°F ceiling and the removable-probe design. A second round-up ran a heat-recovery test that includes a 10 x 16 in Chefman entry, but the measured result could not be retrieved.
Cooking temperatures and cleanup
The manual is unusually specific for a budget appliance. It lists a 2 to 4 minute preheat, 200–225°F to warm food, 250–350°F for most cooking and 420°F for searing, plus a printed table: burgers at 400–420°F for 8–10 minutes, steak at 420°F for 13–15 minutes, pancakes at 250–300°F for 4–5 minutes and bacon at 350–420°F for 6–8 minutes. Cleaning is the design’s best feature: pull the control unit straight out and the body goes on the bottom rack, the drip tray on the top rack. The guide requires thoroughly drying the electrical port before reassembly, warns that a loose or badly seated probe means the griddle will not heat properly, and forbids aerosol cooking spray on the nonstick.
Support and running costs
Running cost is essentially nil — no proprietary consumables, no filters, no pods — so the only real cost is replacing the unit or a lost control unit, and no parts catalog for this series was found. The warranty is one year from retail purchase, non-transferable, and needs proof of purchase.
Is it worth it?
At $29–35 this is a strong value for a compact griddle that is genuinely dishwasher-safe as a whole unit, and the absence of exact-model testing matters least there. At $36–40 it is fair, because 10 x 20 in competitors from Bella, Dash, Black+Decker and Presto enter the conversation and Chefman’s own Extra-Large 10 x 20 in was on sale at $45.00 against a $49.99 reference. At $41–45 the value is weak, and note that Chefman direct’s grey price of $44.99 is above Best Buy’s grey price of $39.99 for the same model code. Buy the 10 x 16 in version if counter space is the constraint; buy the larger one if surface area is, since 160 sq in is under ATK’s 200 sq in floor.
Which model this is
This is the Chefman All-Purpose Nonstick Classic Griddle in its 10 x 16 in form, sold as black RJ23-SM-V3 and grey RJ23-SM-GREY-WM, on the RJ23-SM chassis with the RJ23-SM-V3 and RJ23-SM-V4 guide revisions. The Amazon listing for this model is ASIN B0C4ZTPS2X.
Do not merge it with the Chefman All-Purpose Extra-Large 10 x 20 in (RJ23-LG, 1500 W), the 20-inch XL, the RJ23-SG indoor grill or the RJ23-SG-PL.
