Chefman CraftBrew Espresso Machine RJ54-SS-15-D: problems, parts and running costs
Checked: 2026-10-17
Summary
A compact semi-automatic espresso maker with a 15-bar-rated pump, pressurized baskets and a manual steam wand, for first-time home baristas willing to do their own puck prep. The recurring trouble is water and heat related: owners report machines that prime with loud pumping, deliver no water and then flash OVERHEAT, plus normal OVERHEAT after steaming, occasional touch-control glitches and leaks. Running costs are coffee, descaler and electricity, with one double a day landing near $177.92 a year in an illustrative example.
Common problems and fixes
- No water flow on first prime, then OVERHEAT — an April 23, 2026 r/espresso owner reported loud pumping with a full tank but no water, then an overheat signal while the body felt barely warm; an August owner said activating the frother helped and another reported the same in October. The cause was not diagnosed in the thread; first check adequate preheat, tank seating and scale, then contact support. [2][9]
- Normal OVERHEAT after steaming — the manual says brewing immediately after steam can be blocked until the heater cools, so pull espresso before frothing milk. Also check for a leftover shipping sticker blocking ventilation before condemning the machine. [2][6][9]
- Leaks around the portafilter or drip tray — side drips can come from an incompletely locked handle, grounds on the basket rim or too much coffee, and the listed bottom-leak cause is an overfull drip tray. If water exits near the cord or repeats with a correctly seated empty portafilter, stop use and contact support. [2][5]
- Steam wand needs wiping and purging — the manual says wipe and purge for a few seconds after every milk use, or residue can block the tip and thin the foam; retailer feedback calls the frother difficult to clean. [2][8]
Parts and consumables
- Commercial descaling solution — the January 2026 manual directs a commercial descaling solution per its own package directions, then a programmed flush cycle; no proprietary Chefman solution is required and no exact cost per cleaning was verified. Budget an assumed $3 per cleaning, four cleanings a year, $12. [11]
- Optional stainless milk pitcher — a De’Longhi 12-fl-oz pitcher at $19.99 or a Unique Bargains 12-oz jug at $15.99, both at Target; not an OEM in-box accessory. [17][23]
- Optional coffee scale, tamper and hand grinder — no branded requirement; a 59 mm portafilter measurement is not enough to order a tamper. A separate grinder makes a meaningful difference for dialing in real espresso. [10][16]
Yearly running cost
There is no subscription, app fee or capsule license. Coffee: the manual doses about 14 g per double; two doubles a day is 28 g/day, about 10.22 kg (22.53 lb) a year, roughly $315.42 at an assumed $14/lb; one double a day is about 11.27 lb, roughly $157.71. Power: rated 1350 W; a hypothetical day equal to five full-power minutes is 0.1125 kWh, about 41.06 kWh a year, roughly $8.21 at an assumed $0.20/kWh. Descaler: an assumed $3 per cleaning, four cleanings a year, $12. One double a day lands near $177.92 a year and two doubles near $335.63, excluding milk, taxes and repairs. [1][2][11]
When it is a good buy
Prices checked October 2026. Target and Walmart listed the stainless RJ54-SS-15-D at $99.99, with earlier Target snapshots at $79.99; Chefman direct lists $119.99 with $99.99 promotions at times. The black stainless adds $30 at $129.99 for finish, not brewing hardware. An open-box unit was listed at $62, not a new appliance. For a new stainless machine: $75–85 is strong value for a beginner; $86–100 is reasonable if you accept the one-thermoblock workflow and have easy returns; $101–119 is weaker, so wait for a $79.99–99.99 offer; $120–135 means skipping the black surcharge on value grounds. Above $135 consider the De’Longhi Stilosa EC260BK at $149.99 (33.8 fl oz tank, 1100 W), the CASABREWS CM5418 at $139.99 (pressure gauge, 51 mm bottomless portafilter sold separately at $39–45) or the Chefman Barista Pro at $149.99 (1.8 L tank, different platform).
