Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

Caraway’s 6.5 qt ceramic-coated Dutch oven is a light, colorful pot for soups, stews and braises at moderate heat; it is not cast iron, so heat retention and bread baking fall short of enameled cast iron. Check the care rules before you buy: handwash only, low-to-medium heat, no broiler, and the coating needs oil or butter to stay nonstick.

Strengths

  • Even browning of meat and good deglazing of aromatics (Reviewed.com).
  • Heat distribution even for the most part in lab testing (Good Housekeeping).
  • Light weight and colorful design; lab’s “most stylish pick” among ceramic sets (Good Housekeeping).
  • Free of PTFE, PFOA, PFAS, lead and cadmium; third-party tested for 600+ PFAS compounds (Caraway).

Weaknesses

  • Not cast iron: heat and steam retention fall short, so roasted chicken and sourdough suffered (Reviewed.com).
  • Lid has a small vent hole and no basting divots, releasing heat and steam (Reviewed.com).
  • Heavier than other nonstick options; lid handles get hot; lids collect condensation (Good Housekeeping).
  • Exterior staining becomes harder to remove over time (Good Housekeeping).
  • Ceramic coating loses nonstick performance faster than traditional nonstick and needs low-to-medium heat (Good Housekeeping).
  • Handwash only; not dishwasher- or broiler-safe (Caraway care instructions).

Which model this is

This page covers the Caraway Ceramic Dutch Oven, 6.5 qt, the ceramic-coated (non-cast-iron) pot with a matching lid, sold in colors including Cream, Gray, Navy, Sage, Perracotta and Marigold. The Amazon listing for this SKU is ASIN B09SS3C751. Published dimensions are identical across colors on the manufacturer page.

Heat retention and baking

Because the body is not cast iron, heat retention was weaker: a roasted chicken took much longer to cook through and a sourdough loaf lacked the characteristic springy crumb. The lid has a small vent hole that releases heat and steam and lacks basting divots. Good Housekeeping’s lab found heat distribution even for the most part, but browning concentrated toward the center rather than near the handles; steak seared evenly, while eggs stuck after the first one. Consumer testers gave high scores for even cooking but noted the need for lower temperatures.

Coating and care

The ceramic coating is made without PTFE, PFOA, PFAS, lead and cadmium and is third-party tested for 600+ PFAS compounds. Care is strict: handwash with warm soapy water and a non-abrasive sponge, low-to-medium heat only, preheat no more than about 90 seconds, use oil or butter, and use wooden, silicone, plastic or nylon utensils. No metal utensils, oil sprays, abrasive cleaners, broiler or dishwasher. Cool completely before cold water to avoid thermal shock. The coating needs low heat and tends to lose nonstick performance faster than traditional nonstick; exterior stains become harder to remove over time. Manufacturer care instructions warn against thermal shock, metal utensils and abrasive cleaners.

Is it worth it?

At the observed $139 sale price (list $165, 16% off, save $26) with a 30-day trial and 1-year US warranty, the pot is a reasonable value for buyers prioritizing light weight, color and easy cleanup at moderate temperatures. At the $165 list price, value is weaker. It is weaker for bread baking, high-heat searing and heat retention, where enameled cast iron (Lodge at the value end, Le Creuset at the premium end) tested better. The defining differentiator is the combination of light weight, color range and easy cleanup versus cast-iron heat retention, not the “non-toxic” marketing, since ceramic coatings generally lose nonstick faster. Recurring costs are cooking oil or butter, dish soap and a non-abrasive sponge; if the coating degrades, the remedy is replacement of the whole pot, as no re-coating or part replacement is offered.
