Summary

A 13-inch hard-anodized nonstick deep skillet with a tempered glass lid, sold as a two-piece set and built on Calphalon’s MineralShield coating. Check the listing name before you buy: it is one large skillet, not a multi-piece cookware set, and it does not work on induction.

Strengths

  • Food releases cleanly; owners consistently call the nonstick effective.
  • Thick hard-anodized aluminum heats evenly and feels sturdy.
  • The pan stacks and nests with other Premier pieces to save cabinet space.
  • The tempered glass lid lets you watch food without lifting it.
  • A lifetime warranty backs the pan on paper.
  • A stay-cool handle and dishwasher-safe cleanup.

Weaknesses

  • Consumer Reports rated nonstick durability only “good”: the line withstood 2,000 steel-wool strokes, mid-pack among tested sets.
  • Owners report scratches, flaking and coating bits in food after a few years.
  • Several owners say warranty claims for coating wear were declined as “not enough to replace.”
  • The metal-utensil-safe rating is disputed; reviewers and owners recommend nylon or silicone.
  • Not induction compatible.
  • Dishwasher-safe per the maker, but owners recommend hand-washing to prolong the coating.

Cooking performance

Consumer Reports instrumented-tested the same MineralShield line in the 11-piece Premier Hard-Anodized set (model 2172320), not this exact skillet. It rated cooking evenness, speed of heating and simmering excellent; food release, handle temperature and handle sturdiness very good; and nonstick durability good. The durability result improved on the older Calphalon Classic line, which CR rated fair, but it sits mid-pack rather than top-tier. No lab test of model 2172327 itself was found.

Nonstick durability and the warranty

Calphalon claims MineralShield is 5x more durable than its prior Classic nonstick, a relative claim with no independent lab verification beyond CR’s comparison. Owners are the other data point, and they split: one calls the Premier Space-Saving line “the best set I’ve ever owned… tough as nails,” while others describe sticking, flaking and coating pieces in food after several years.

The warranty is where the value gets murky. Calphalon states a lifetime warranty, but owners report claims for coating degradation being declined, and one says the replacement pan carried no nonstick warranty coverage. Nobody has published a defect rate, so treat coating wear as a known wear item rather than a manufacturing fault.

Care and upkeep

Dishwasher-safe is the official line, but owners recommend hand-washing to extend coating life, and independent reviewers suggest nylon or silicone utensils despite the metal-utensil-safe rating. There are no user-replaceable parts beyond the handle and lid; when the coating goes, the pan is the wear item and replacement is the normal end of life.

Is it worth it?

Calphalon lists the 13-inch skillet at $159.99 direct, a premium over most large nonstick skillets. Consumer Reports lists the 11-piece set in the same line at $399.99 at retailers, and Target carried the 11-piece MineralShield set at $399.99, reduced from $425.99; Kohl’s listed the 1.5-quart Space-Saving saucepan at $99.99, regular $109.99. You pay for the MineralShield coating, the lifetime warranty and the stackable ecosystem.

Which model this is

This page covers the Calphalon Premier Hard-Anodized Nonstick 13-Inch Deep Skillet with Lid, model 2172327, sold as a two-piece set. The Amazon listing titles it “Calphalon Premier Space-Saving Nonstick Cookware Set,” which misleads: it is a single deep skillet, and “Space-Saving” refers to the stackable design it shares with the Premier Space-Saving line, while the manufacturer files model 2172327 under the standard Premier Hard-Anodized Nonstick line. The listing is ASIN B0B812XLYM.

Don’t confuse it with the actual multi-piece Premier sets: model 2172349, the 10-piece, and model 2172320, the 11-piece.
