Summary

A 1.7 L stainless steel kettle with five fixed temperature presets and a 20-minute keep-warm, aimed at tea and coffee drinkers who want one-button temperatures. There is no independent test of this exact model, so check the preset steps and the short US warranty before you pay a premium for it.

Strengths

  • Five preset temperatures cover green, white, oolong and black tea plus French press in one touch.
  • The 20-minute keep-warm holds water near 95°C (200°F) for a second cup.
  • Brushed stainless steel body with BPA-free water-contact parts.
  • The soft-opening lid releases steam gently and is meant to stop splash-back.
  • A removable mesh filter and a 360° cordless base make it easy to fill and clean.
  • An owner who replaced a faulty earlier Breville reports the BKE845 works great.

Weaknesses

  • The presets are fixed steps, not degree-by-degree control.
  • Keep-warm lasts 20 minutes, where some rivals hold for 30.
  • It must be pressed before or during heating; it does not start on its own.
  • The US warranty is 1 year, short for a kettle at this price.
  • No independent outlet has published a measured boil time, temperature accuracy or noise figure for this model.
  • Owner evidence is thin: one report of an 18-month-old unit that stopped heating and a vague Reddit malfunction mention.

Temperatures and presets

Breville fixes the presets at 80, 85, 90, 95 and 100°C — Black, Green, White, Oolong and French press. Retailers map those to green and white tea at 175°F, oolong near 195°F, French press near 200°F and black tea at 212°F. There is no dial to pick an in-between temperature, so if you brew a tea that wants, say, 85°C exactly, the Green setting is your only option. Keep-warm runs for 20 minutes and, when the boil setting is chosen, holds the water near 95°C (200°F). It has to be switched on before, during or within a minute of the heating cycle; it does not engage automatically afterward.

Reliability, parts and running costs

Nobody has published a failure rate for the BKE845, and no established outlet has tested this exact model. Wirecutter’s kettle guide recommends the cheaper Breville IQ Kettle (BKE820, $172) instead, and notes that kettles in general fail often and that variable-temperature models break down more than boil-only ones. Australia’s CHOICE tested the BKE845 but its boil-time, noise and energy results sit behind a paywall. Owner reports are sparse: one owner on ProductReview.com.au says the BKE845 works great after a faulty BKE820, and a JustAnswer case describes an 18-month-old unit that powered on but stopped heating. A r/breville thread complains about Breville service on a kettle of unconfirmed model.

Running costs are small. There is no capsule or consumable lock-in; the recurring items are electricity from the 1500 W element, descaling solution and the occasional filter. Breville recommends its own Kettle Cleaner and a boil-and-stand routine, and the mesh filter rinses under hot water. The kettle is a sealed appliance with no user-serviceable internal parts documented.

Is it worth it?

Breville lists the kettle at $219.95, and Abt and Madcity Kitchen list it at the same $219.95. Williams Food Equipment shows the Damson Blue finish at $259.99, marked down from $299.99, and Breville Canada lists it from $219.99 to $299.99 depending on finish. For that money you get the preset layout, the soft-open lid and the stainless body, but not proven performance and not a long warranty. Wirecutter points buyers to the Cuisinart CPK-17P1, which holds for 30 minutes and carries a 3-year warranty at roughly $90 to $140, and to the Breville IQ Kettle at $172. The BKE845 makes the most sense if you use several presets and want the Breville finish, ideally below $200. Buyers who want to-the-degree control or a longer hold should compare before paying full price.

Which model this is

This page covers the Smart Kettle Luxe, model family BKE845, sold in brushed stainless steel, black stainless steel, black truffle, damson blue, almond nougat and noir finishes. The US instruction manual says it suits all BKE845 models and lists SKUs such as BKE845BSS1BUS1, BKE845DBL1BUS1 and BKE845SST1BUS1. It is a different kettle from the lower-end Breville Smart Kettle (BKE700) and the IQ Kettle (BKE820). The US listing is ASIN B07T23DYJB. The model is discontinued in Australia but still listed by Breville in the US and Canada.
