Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A large connected countertop oven with 13 cooking functions and app-guided recipes, better suited to roasting and baking than to fast air frying. Check the counter space before buying: it is 21.4 inches wide and weighs 38.89 lb.

Strengths

  • 13 cooking functions driven by six quartz elements and PID control.
  • Large enough for a 13-inch pizza, a 12-cup muffin tray or a 14-lb turkey.
  • The Breville+ app adds guided recipes and Autopilot multi-stage cooking.
  • Wear-prone trays and racks are sold separately by Breville.
  • Owners report several years of reliable operation in Breville threads.

Weaknesses

  • RTINGS rated air frying 6.9/10, calling it slow and uneven next to dedicated air fryers.
  • Long-term testing found browning concentrated toward the rear of the cavity.
  • The 21.4-inch-wide, 38.89-lb body takes permanent counter space.
  • Some advanced functions live in the app rather than on the front panel.
  • The exterior gets very hot, and deep cleaning is difficult.

Air frying performance

RTINGS tested the BOV950 and rated its air-frying results 6.9/10: decent food with some undercooked and burnt pieces, and slower preheat and cook times than smaller basket air fryers. It praised the wide temperature and fan range. Serious Eats, cooking over long-term use, found strong general and air-frying performance but uneven browning toward the rear. If fast, even basket frying is the priority, this is not the machine for it.

The app and cooking modes

Breville pairs the oven with the Breville+ app for guided recipes and Autopilot multi-stage cooking, and owners who use it report good responsiveness and useful recipes. Not every function is on the front panel; some advanced modes are app-dependent. The 13 on-device presets are Toast, Bagel, Bake, Air Fry, Broil, Roast, Pizza, Cookies, Proof, Reheat, Slow Cook, Keep Warm and Dehydrate, and the manual documents separate convection and super-convection behavior by mode. The connected features are part of the value, not an extra.

Cleaning, parts and upkeep

There are no required consumables. Deep cleaning is the recurring owner complaint, and the accessory set is where the wear shows: the crumb tray, air-fry basket, oven rack, baking pan, broil rack and pizza pan are all sold as replacement parts by Breville. Long-term owners praise the app while warning that the exterior gets very hot and that cleaning between the elements takes patience. Leave clearance around the oven because of that heat.

Repairs and warranty

The BOV950 carries a two-year limited warranty. The sources read here do not establish user-serviceable heating elements, control boards or door hardware, and no repair pricing outside warranty was found. Related Breville Air Fryer Pro owners report door and timer failures after extended use, but that is the BOV900 family and is not evidence about the BOV950.

Is it worth it?

It earns its place as a countertop oven, not as a dedicated air fryer. Buy it if you will use the capacity and the multi-stage recipes; look elsewhere if you mainly want fast, even basket frying. RTINGS’ exact-model results show speed and evenness are not its strengths, so the connected features carry the value.

Which model this is

This page covers Breville the Joule Oven Air Fryer Pro, model BOV950, current US SKU BOV950BSS1BUS1. It is not the non-connected Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro BOV900. Breville’s US page lists 21.4 x 17.3 x 12.7 inches while the Canadian page rounds the same metric figures to 21.5 x 17.3 x 12.8 inches; that is regional rounding, not a different machine.
