Summary
A 1.7-liter boil-only electric kettle with a soft-opening lid and a 360-degree powered base, for households boiling several mugs a day.
Strengths
- The soft, button-controlled lid opens slowly, moderating steam release compared with an abrupt spring lid.
- Dual water-level windows suit left- and right-handed users; one Walmart buyer praised two-sided viewing.
- 1.7 L with auto-off suits tea and instant food; recent Best Buy users praised ease of use and heating speed.
- Repair spares are real: Breville lists a SP0002471 mesh filter at $7.95 and a SP0024165 powered base at $29.95.
- CHOICE independently tested an Australian BKE700, though all numeric results are membership-only.
Weaknesses
- Cracked plastic lid windows recur in owner reports, sometimes with lid-button or base-contact failures.
- No selectable temperature or keep-warm; delicate teas need cooling or a different kettle.
- The brushed steel wall gets hot and the water windows and lid window are plastic.
- The MAX line is hard to read; steam clearance of 8 inches makes under-cabinet use awkward.
- Two cups is the minimum boil, so one-cup users waste water.
- At $99.95 it is a full-price boil-only kettle; temperature-selecting rivals cost the same or less.

|---|---|
| Capacity | 1.7 L (about 57.5 US fl oz), seven manufacturer-marked cups. |
| Fill range | 2 cups minimum, 7 cups maximum. |

| Electrical | 110–120V, three-prong grounded outlet; power strips and shared overloaded circuits are discouraged. |

| Materials | brushed stainless steel shell, concealed stainless heating surface, two clear BPA-free fill windows, hinged soft-release lid with clear window, non-detachable spout with a washable removable mesh scale filter, lighted on/off switch, 360-degree detachable jug and base with cord storage. |

| Use | water only. Fill to max, boil and discard before first use. |
| Cleaning | unplug and cool; do not submerge jug or base, remove the earth prong or use a dishwasher. |
| Warranty | Breville Canada lists one year; the US policy requires a model-specific lookup, so expect about one year and confirm in writing. |

Soft top and lid
The soft, button-controlled lid opens slowly, which moderates steam release versus an abrupt spring-open lid. That does not make opening a boiling kettle safe — the manual forbids opening the lid during heating and lifting the kettle before it switches off. Owner reports from Australia and Canada describe cracked plastic lid windows, sometimes with a stuck release button or a lid that will not stay closed. One Australian owner reported three kettles in four years with cracked lid windows; another got a discounted replacement after about two years, and a third cracked just past the twelve-month term. Replacement lid or window parts are not sold as user parts, and DIY gluing of food- or steam-contact plastic is not recommended. If a cracked lid leaks steam toward your hand or has loose fragments, stop using it and contact Breville.
Power and heating
Breville’s current US page advertises 1800W concealed rapid boil, while its own North American BKE700 booklet says 1500W, as does an older US retailer description and the current Canadian page. No verified engineering notice explains the difference, so the rating plate on the actual unit governs. The manual calls for 110–120V on a three-prong grounded outlet and discourages power strips and shared overloaded circuits. The kettle boils to the ambient boiling point and switches off automatically, with boil-dry protection that resets after cooling and a secondary overheat cutoff that needs Breville service. Before first use, fill to maximum, boil and discard.
Running costs and parts
There is no subscription: the kettle runs on household mains electricity and ordinary water. The reusable mesh filter has no required annual replacement schedule; replace it only when torn or damaged. Parts Breville lists for the BKE700: a SP0002471 mesh filter at $7.95 and a SP0024165 powered base at $29.95; a third-party reseller lists the same base at $42.16. A Breville BES0070NUC1 descaler four-pack is $14.95 but out of stock; a quarter of the pack is about $3.74 per packet if it becomes buyable. The manual’s alternative is white vinegar: one part vinegar to two parts water, fill to two-thirds, boil, stand overnight, then empty and boil and discard fresh water twice. Descale only when scale appears; frequency depends on water hardness. Electricity: raising 1 L of water from 20°C to 100°C takes about 0.093 kWh delivered to the water, about 0.109 kWh at the outlet at an assumed 85% heater efficiency. One such boil a day for a year is about 39.9 kWh, or $7.98 at an assumed $0.20 per kWh. A daily 1.7 L boil is about 0.186 kWh a boil, 67.9 kWh a year, or $13.58 at $0.20 per kWh. These are arithmetic illustrations, not a measured unit test. At $99.95 spread over a hypothetical three years, ownership is about $33.32 a year before electricity and cleaning. Three years is not a guaranteed service life: owners report failures after months and operation for about a decade.
Is it worth it?
Breville USA, Best Buy and a Walmart marketplace listing all showed $99.95 in October 2026; an older Walmart SKU advertised $90.99 but was out of stock. At that price the Soft Top Pure is a full-price boil-only kettle competing with temperature-selecting rivals at the same money: the Cuisinart CPK-17P1 is $99.95 direct with six temperature presets and a three-year warranty, the OXO adjustable-temperature 1.75 L kettle is $119.99, and a Hamilton Beach 1.7 L simple kettle is $34.99. The research’s own price guidance calls under $55 exceptional, $55 to $70 attractive and $70 to $85 reasonable for a soft-top preference, with $86 to $100 as full market price and over $100 a reason to pick a temperature-selecting model unless the lid matters. Paying more than $100 only makes sense if the slow-opening lid is the deciding feature.
Which model this is
This page covers the Breville Soft Top Pure, model BKE700BSSUSC, brushed stainless, sold in the US as Best Buy SKU 6640602. Do not confuse it with the Breville Smart Kettle Luxe or the Temp Select model, which offer temperature control this one lacks.
