Summary
An assisted semi-automatic espresso machine that keeps a real portafilter and manual steam wand but takes the guesswork out of dosing and tamping. Check how many milk drinks you make back to back: the Thermocoil recovers more slowly than Breville’s ThermoJet machines.
Strengths
- Guided dose and assisted tamping cut beginner puck-prep mess.
- A real 54 mm portafilter and manual steam wand keep hands-on control.
- The integrated grinder makes it a one-box setup.
- PID Thermocoil holds a set brew temperature.
- Volumetric shot control and adjustable temperature add repeatability.
- Good fit for a household where more than one person pulls shots.
Weaknesses
- The grinder has only 25 stepped settings.
- Owner threads report grinder and dose-system trouble.
- Milk steaming is manual, and the Thermocoil is slower for consecutive drinks.
- The integrated grinder and brewer mean a grinder fault affects the whole unit.
- Rear tank and hopper clearance matters more than the footprint.
- Normal purge water can collect in the drip area and read as a leak.

Dosing and tamping
This is a semi-automatic with help in the two places beginners struggle. The grinder judges the dose and corrects the next grind, and the lever-assisted tamper applies a repeatable press with a finishing twist. Everything else stays manual: you dial the grind, read the extraction and steam the milk yourself.
Pressure and temperature
“15 bar” is the pump’s capability, not the pressure at the puck; Breville specifies extraction at 9 bar after a low-pressure pre-infusion. The Thermocoil with PID targets 200°F. Independent temperature-stability and grinder particle-distribution measurements were not found, so treat the temperature claims as manufacturer specification rather than lab-verified.
Grinder and owner reports
Exact-model owner threads contain several independent signals about the grinder and dose system: a grinder that refuses to start with dose indicators flashing, one that suddenly produces too little coffee, and grind that turns unexpectedly coarse. A September 2026 half-dose post appeared in two subreddits and counts as one report. Other isolated signals include shot-volume inconsistency, a flaking component under the shower head before two years, and water around the base that Breville described as normal purge water.
Maintenance and repairs
Routine ownership means water-filter changes, backflush and cleaning-tablet cycles, descaling by water hardness or alert, steam-wand purging, grinder and chute cleaning, and drip-tray care. Breville sells exact replacement water tanks and drip trays and provides warranty service, but pricing and availability of the grinder, thermocoil and Impress internals were not established.
Is it worth it?
At the current street level it is good value for someone who wants one box with assisted puck prep and is happy to learn manual espresso. Near the old list price the case weakens, because a separate grinder and a faster Breville machine become easier to justify. A Bambino Plus plus a capable standalone grinder is the nearby alternative for faster heat-up and easier upgrades.
