Summary

Check the fit and the armrests before you buy: the lumbar is very firm, the armrests are hard plastic, and taller and shorter users both report seat-depth problems.

Strengths

  • TechGearLab scored it 77/100 and ranked it 4th of 18 chairs tested.
  • The double-mesh back breathes well, and owners call the foam seat comfortable.
  • Seven adjustment points cover seat depth, 3D armrests, tilt tension and lumbar height.
  • Branch’s support sends free replacement parts and offers returns years after purchase.
  • Assembly takes about 12 minutes solo with the included hardware.

Weaknesses

  • Hard plastic armrests are the most common complaint and were flagged by all four TechGearLab testers.
  • The tilt tension knob sits awkwardly and needs the chair flipped over to reach.
  • Lumbar support is very firm and causes back pain for some owners.
  • Creaking appears after 2–3 years, and one owner reported foam wear within a year.
  • Maximum recline of 56 degrees is below the tested average of 66.7.
  • No headrest is included, and the optional one reportedly does not stay up.

Assembly, armrests and adjustments

The chair arrives disassembled with all hardware and an online guide accessed by QR code; no printed manual is in the box. TechGearLab measured assembly at 12 minutes 15 seconds for one person. The armrests are the weak point — hard plastic, not padded, and quick to unlock from position. The seat pan measures 20.0 inches wide against a tested average of 20.3, so it can feel narrow for larger users, and one 5'5" owner found the seat ran inches too long at its shortest setting. The tilt tension knob is awkward to reach and needs the chair turned over to adjust.

Durability and support

Long-term signals are mixed. Multiple owners report creaking starting around year three, one reported foam wearing out within a year of 9-to-5 use, and the adjustment mechanisms are plastic-heavy. Against that, Branch has a strong record on warranty: owners report free replacement armrests and mechanisms years after purchase, ergonomic consultations and returns even after three years. The 7-year warranty is the main reason many buyers choose it. Open-box units come with a shorter 3-year warranty.

Is it worth it?

Branch sells the chair direct at $369, with open-box units from $247 and an open-box sale at $359. TechGearLab listed it at $389, and Tom’s Guide saw it at $299 from Branch and $309 at Best Buy in early 2024. Below about $330 it is a strong value for the adjustment set and warranty; at $349 to $369 it is fair to good against the Steelcase Series 1 at $531 with a Consumer Reports score of 86. Above $389 the value weakens against brands with longer track records. Optional extras include the $49 headrest, a $149 woven chair mat and a $99 adjustable footrest, and HSA or FSA payment can cut the price by up to 30 percent.
