Summary
The ROS20VSC is a corded 5-inch random orbit sander and polisher with a 2.5 A motor, built for finish sanding and for buyers picking up their first random orbit sander.
Strengths
- The six-position speed dial lets you dial down to a speed that avoids swirl marks on finish work.
- At 3.5 lb with a soft-grip top, it is comfortable one-handed, and owners report low vibration.
- Dust capture is effective for its class, and a vacuum hose adapter is in the box.
- Bosch lists service parts for it, so it is a parts-channel tool rather than a sealed throwaway.
- It has been a frequently recommended budget 5-inch random orbit sander for years.
Weaknesses
- The 2.5 A motor and 3/32 in orbit are slow at heavy stock removal; this is a finishing sander, not a levelling sander.
- There is no front handle, a recurring caution in owner reports.
- Owners report the hook-and-loop backing pad separating from the foam, and Bosch’s own response to a review acknowledges a pad that “began separating”.
- The manual directs all tool service to Bosch service stations, so repairs are not owner-serviceable.
- The warranty is one year, short for a tool that may see daily use.

Speed, orbit and the pad
The six-position dial spans 7,500-12,000 OPM, and the low end is where this sander earns its keep: slower speeds plus the integral pad dampening brake are what limit swirl marks on finish work. The 3/32 in (2.5 mm) orbit leaves finer scratches than a 3/16 in orbit, but it also removes material more slowly, which is why the tool is positioned as a finishing sander rather than a levelling sander. The “polisher” in the model name reflects the variable-speed range and pad dampening, not a separate polishing kit. Bosch’s 35,000 figure describes the hook-and-loop disc attachment, not a performance metric.
Dust collection
The included microfilter canister traps particles Bosch says are as small as a half micron. Owners call the dust capture effective for this class of tool.
Repairs, parts and running costs
Bosch’s spare-parts catalogue lists service parts for the ROS20VSC — armature, bearing flange, brush holder, cable clip and carbon-brush set — so this is a parts-channel tool rather than a sealed throwaway. The manual still directs all tool service to a Bosch Factory Service Center or authorized service station, and the power cord must be serviced only by Bosch. Running costs are the usual consumables: sanding discs, replacement pads and dust canister filters. The warranty is one year from the date of purchase.
Is it worth it?
A 2019 tool roundup listed the ROS20VSC at about $69 (Tool Report, 2019). No US street price was verified for this review; the live store panel is where to check it. Tool roundups have repeatedly named it the value pick against DeWalt and Makita. For finish sanding and a first random orbit sander, it is a defensible budget choice with a parts channel and cheap consumables. If your work is heavy stock removal, the 2.5 A motor and small orbit will feel slow.
Which model this is
This page covers the Bosch ROS20VSC 5 In. Palm Random Orbit Sander/Polisher, part number 0601387514 (US), UPC 000346437522. The name breaks down as ROS for random orbit sander and VS for variable speed. Do not confuse it with the single-speed ROS10, the hard-case kit ROS20VSK, or the newer GET-series dual-mode sanders, which share the platform but differ in switch, case or motor. The Amazon listing for this sander is ASIN B00BD5G9VA.
