Summary
Bosch’s GWS8-45-RT is a factory-reconditioned GWS8-45: a 120 V, 7.5-amp, 4-1/2-inch corded angle grinder with a lock-on slide switch, sold for roughly half a new one. It suits Type 27 metal grinding, weld cleanup and wire brushing, so check the job before you buy — Bosch does not approve this model for cut-off wheels or masonry cutting.
Strengths
- A manufacturer-rated 7.5-amp, 11,000-rpm grinder for around $49 reconditioned, well under the $82.98 new price at Home Depot.
- Light and slim at 4.2 lb, easy to handle for weld cleanup and confined work.
- Genuine Bosch parts are catalogued for the exact model, from brushes and switches to armature and bearings.
- Simple controls: no battery, charger, firmware, app or paid membership.
- The manual is unusually explicit about approved uses, accessory sizes and maintenance intervals.
- A one-year factory-reconditioned warranty backs the Acme listing.
Weaknesses
- Bosch does not approve this model for Type 41/1A metal cutting or masonry cutting; it is a grinding tool.
- Fixed 11,000 rpm with no variable-speed dial for slow finishing or specialty brushes.
- The lock-on slide switch has drawn owner complaints about disengaging under load, and there is no electronic brake.
- Reconditioned units may arrive without the grinding wheel and with different contents than a new kit.
- Parts and labor can exceed the tool price: a switch is $24.55 and an armature $35.06 at eReplacementParts, before service.
- Remaining brush life on a renewed unit is unknown, and bearings are a service-center job.

What this grinder can and cannot do
Bosch’s manual for the GWS8-45 marks Type 27 metal grinding and wire-wheel brushing as permitted, and concrete surfacing, sanding and wire-cup brushing as allowed only with the specified optional attachments. It marks Type 41/1A metal cutting, concrete and masonry cutting, and Type 1/11 grinding as not supported. Bosch confirmed in a Home Depot Q&A that the supplied guard is for Type 27 grinding and that a cutting guard is not approved or tested for this model. A June 2026 Home Depot buyer returned the tool after finding no approved cutting guard. Third-party videos and some owners still describe it as a cutting tool, but the manufacturer restriction is the one that matters: do not buy this grinder to cut rebar, bolts, tile, concrete or pipe.
Reconditioned condition and what arrives
The -RT suffix describes reconditioned sales condition, not a new motor or an upgraded version. Acme Tools lists it as SKU GWS8-45-RT, UPC 000346488951. Bosch’s technical page is for the underlying GWS8-45, part 3601C88118, and other revision codes such as 3601C8811B exist, so check the ten-digit identifier on the tool’s nameplate before ordering internal parts. The mechanically different GWS8-45-2P paddle-switch variant is a different tool. Acme’s reconditioned package lists the grinder, guard, 5/8-inch clamping flange, round nut, wrench, handle and manual, and does not list a consumable grinding wheel; the new-tool kit includes a 4-1/2-inch abrasive grinding wheel. Bosch’s reconditioned warranty sheet warns that refurbished kits may differ from new, and no per-unit checklist says whether brushes, bearings, switch or armature were replaced or just inspected. Inspect the guard, fasteners, switch, cord, spindle, wobble, vibration and sparking as soon as it arrives, while the return window is open.
Upkeep, parts and running costs
Two owner reports on the underlying new GWS8-45 are worth knowing. A November 2016 buyer said the lock-on switch disengaged during work; Bosch customer service acknowledged the complaint, and no recall or repair bulletin was found. A May 2023 buyer said the gear-cover area heated quickly on first use; Bosch replied that the heating was not normal and offered an evaluation. Neither establishes a failure rate, so treat them as things to test rather than defects.
Service Minder carbon brushes stop the tool when maintenance is due. On a reconditioned unit the remaining brush life is unknown from the SKU alone.
Genuine parts for the exact 3601C88118 model are catalogued, but they add up. eReplacementParts lists the carbon brush set 1619P02892 at $17.20, a switch at $24.55, a power cord at $19.56, a Type 27 guard at $21.96, a clamping flange at $17.20, a lock nut at $21.96, an armature at $35.06, a bearing at $6.55, a motor fan at $6.16 and a gear housing at $31.58, before labor or shipping. An auxiliary handle is $5.55 and a wrench $9.76. One electrical part plus service labor can cost more than the tool.
Running costs are wheels, electricity and occasional service — there is no battery, charger or subscription. Bosch’s nameplate is 120 V at 7.5 A, which is about 900 VA of apparent power, not a measured wattage; assuming 0.75 kW of real draw, 30 minutes a week for 52 weeks at $0.20/kWh gives about 19.5 kWh and $3.90 a year in electricity. One $5.47 Diablo Type 27 wheel a month adds about $65.64 a year, for roughly $69.54 a year in this example; a $17.20 brush set brings a replacement year to about $86.74. Home Depot advertised the Diablo DBD045250701F wheel at $5.47 each and a three-pack DBX045250703P at $11.47, about $3.82 per wheel.
Is it worth it?
Acme Tools’ indexed listing showed the GWS8-45-RT at $49.00, marked down from $65.00, with its usual $6.49 shipping on orders under $199 in October 2026. CPO Outlets listed the same reconditioned tool between $49.99 and $52.99, with free shipping over $49. A new GWS8-45 was $82.98 at Home Depot after an earlier $69 promotional price, so the real saving against new depends on the day and can be as little as about $16. Editorial thresholds put a renewed unit at $40 or less as a strong buy for approved grinding, $41–50 as good, $51–60 as less compelling, and $61 or more as a reason to wait for a discounted new GWS8-45 around $69 or to pick a model whose manual approves your actual task. A new Makita 9557NB is $99 at Home Depot and the paddle-switch 9557PB is $109, but neither should be chosen for cut-off work without checking its own guard and application approvals.
Which model this is
This page covers the factory-reconditioned Bosch GWS8-45, sold as the GWS8-45-RT: 120 V, 7.5 A, 4-1/2-inch, fixed 11,000 rpm, lock-on slide switch. Acme Tools’ SKU is GWS8-45-RT and its UPC is 000346488951. Bosch’s part number for the underlying tool is 3601C88118, but other 3601C8811x revisions exist, so confirm the nameplate before buying parts. The GWS8-45-2P is a different tool with a paddle switch. Bosch’s reconditioned warranty gives these tools the same one-year parts-and-workmanship coverage as new, minus the 30-day money-back promotion and ProVantage service protection.
