Summary
A direct-drive extruder and Mosquito hotend upgrade kit for Artillery Sidewinder X1, X2 and Genius printers, aimed at maker and professional users. Check your firmware before you install: e-steps must be set to 400 at 16 microsteps, or the printer under- or over-extrudes.
Strengths
- Dual-drive LGX extruder gives strong, consistent grip on flexible and abrasive filaments.
- The Mosquito hotend is rated for high-temperature materials, up to a claimed 450°C.
- One-handed nozzle changes are reported by owners of LGX/Mosquito builds.
- The kit bundles extruder, Mosquito hotend, heater, fan and nozzle for Artillery printers.
- Hardened steel drive wheels and a 44:14/37:17 gearing ratio target torque over speed.
Weaknesses
- Installation is involved: stock parts are discarded and firmware e-steps must be recalibrated.
- A clog can be hard to clear because the hotend removal interface sits at the back of the assembly.
- Owners report a filament-sensor spring misalignment causing repeated load and unload loops.
- The Mosquito’s 85% heat-break claim comes from manufacturer copy, not independent measurement.
- The kit is a premium upgrade, roughly $244 to $282, and not a budget path.
- Warranty period for EXT-KIT-93-M is not stated in the sources read.

Installation and firmware
Bondtech recommends this kit for maker and professional users and moderate-to-high-intensity use. The Artillery printhead is stripped during install: the breakout board spacer, silicone sock, hotend, 4020 part cooling fan, extruder, stepper motor and mounting plate are not reused, while the Z-sensor, breakout board cover, breakout board, 4010 cooling fan, heater, thermistor and stepper motor cable are reused. Firmware e-steps must be set to 400 at 16 microsteps after installation; using old values causes under- or over-extrusion. The Mosquito and Mosquito Magnum are the same length, so hotends can be swapped between them, but they are different products. The kit is sold out at some retailers and availability is limited.
Hotend and materials
The Mosquito hotend is 1.75 mm only and is claimed to print up to 450°C, with a heat break that conducts 85% less heat than a typical threaded heat break according to manufacturer and Slice Engineering copy. The included nozzle is a Bondtech CHT 0.4 mm coated brass. The PA12 housing is rated to 100°C and the stepper motor to 80°C, so chamber printing with PLA in a sealed enclosure is not advised. Maintenance means keeping retraction distances short to avoid pulling molten material into the heat break, keeping the hotend cooling fan aimed at the heat sink, and avoiding heat creep. Spare parts such as extruders, accessories, hotends, nozzles, fans and heaters are sold by Bondtech, and Mosquito parts are available separately.
Owner reports and reliability
No instrumented independent test of this exact kit was found; available third-party material is a general extruder comparison and owner forum reports. Owners of Prusa LGX and Mosquito builds report reliable material handling, good grip on flexible and abrasive filaments, and one-handed nozzle changes. The same forum thread reports a filament-sensor spring misalignment that causes repeated unload and load loops, fixable by reshaping the spring or disabling the sensor, and one owner who could not clear a clog without disassembling the assembly. Under-extrusion during first-layer calibration was reported in that thread and left unresolved. A third-party comparison lists the LGX Original at roughly 150 g and about 3:1 gearing, which conflicts with the manufacturer’s 218.6 g net weight and 44:14/37:17 gearing ratio; treat the third-party weight figure as approximate and unverified. Reddit threads about LGX upgrades for Artillery printers exist but their content was not readable.
Cost and value
Bondtech’s legacy store lists the kit at $244.00 (was $299.00) with 7 units left, and TAW Global lists it at $281.99 and sold out. The standalone LGX extruder runs about $99.00 to $99.99 and the Mosquito hotend $149.99, so buying them separately totals roughly $249 plus mounts and accessories; the kit is roughly comparable in cost and includes the Artillery mount. At $244 to $282 this is a premium upgrade for maker and professional users, not a budget path, and owners needing only the extruder can buy the standalone LGX for about $99 to $100. Ownership costs are 1.75 mm filament plus replacement nozzles, boron nitride paste, fans and heaters; there is no subscription or lock-in.
Is it worth it?
The kit makes sense for Artillery Sidewinder or Genius owners who want a dual-drive direct extruder and a high-temperature Mosquito hotend in one package and are comfortable with an involved install and firmware changes. The warranty period for EXT-KIT-93-M is not stated in the sources read.
Which model this is
This page covers the Mosquito (non-Magnum) kit, part number EXT-KIT-93-M, EAN 7350011416387, for Artillery Sidewinder X1, X2 and Genius printers. The seed Amazon listing is ASIN B0CM6Y9HX2. Do not confuse it with the Mosquito Magnum variant or the LGX Copperhead Artillery kits, which are different products.
